I don't think he meant to suggest that at all and though I haven't watched the clip this is probably a deliberately unfair interpretation of what he said.

Larry Parrish posted:It's honestly loving insane to me that the Democrats still think they lost an election purely to sexism and not class struggle. If anything it just shows you how amazingly sheltered the ruling elite are. "Its complicated" Part of the problem is that you can spin things any which way you like and find a rationale. Was sexism a part? I'm sure there was a good dollop of that, yes. "Trump that bitch" being one of the more obvious aspects. No one is immune to echo chambers and narrative exclusions. Outside of racism/sexism, would you think "trade war trump" would actually help the rust belt and gain its favor? If anything he'd hasten its demise. But people didn't see that through to its conclusion. They're more focused on NOW and their next paycheck. So its not insanity. It's just being so focused on incrementalism and getting what you can now that you miss that people are looking for the sweeping promise. Incrementalism is great for wonks and people not on the verge of losing everything who can consider it. Sweeping promises work for people buying powerball because that's their only chance to escape their hellhole dying towns.

look its fun to poo poo on the neoliberal failures but you don't have to permanently write off people who think like this and think we lost because of [insert podesta excuse here]. in fact now is the perfect time to try to communicate with them where it blew up and explain to them why this happened. don't harass them, don't be mean to them, acknowledge how terrible and scared they feel and then tell them that the real progressive movement is the obvious correct direction to move in because there's no war but class war (maybe dont say that directly to your friends who work in banks but are socially liberal)

I assumed because of her relative successes as a Senator and Sec of State, she had gotten the hang of campaigning and winning people over. A bit naive in retrospect but I was wasn't running a major presidential campaign or clearing the bench for a chosen successor.

Political language is perverted. If you are a strong advocate for Wall Street, you are a centrist. If you are a strong advocate for human rights or single payer, you are a radical.

The minute people start running in primaries for congress is the best time to donate to get the person who you like the best to win. There is also going to be a big push for state houses. Who will lead that at this moment. I do not know. If he can find a local office willing to take him then that would be a good place to start.

MJ12 posted:I think you're underselling and overselling some things here. They need to be told they're wrong because we're running a very suboptimal coalition that is highly dependent on whims and an inspiring charismatic candidate to do well. It's not a doomed coalition which will never have relevance. Had just a little more gone right for Clinton or a little more gone wrong for Trump it could have won. In 20 years or so, this majority-minority coalition is probably going to be a force to be reckoned with. But that's 20 years from now, and a 50/50 chance is a bad chance when that's a 50% chance of loving a lot of people over. You're focusing on one office though. To regain statehouses and governorships the Democratic party needs a lot more than a face-lift. If a little more had gone Hillary's way the Republicans would still control both houses as well as most statehouses and most governorships. It has to be totally rebuilt away from third way is and identity politics.
