Princess Di posted:Alright. Man I don't know. But, the first thing they have to do is find some younger standard bearers to rally around; they need people in the House and Senate to start pissing off both the GOP and more established people in the Democratic party; people who start making a name for theirself. It took Ted Cruz less than a year to piss off every Republican in the Senate and he made a name for himself doing it; he marked his territory and rode it all the way into the primaries. I really think that's the biggest challenge right now, the Democratic party needs some people to become a rallying point, other than Warren and Sanders who are both too old. I'm not against full socialism but it just doesn't sell in the U.S. Plus, any hope of doing anything legislatively is gone for the next 2 years at the very least. I don't care if it's the Castro brothers, Kamal Harris or anybody else, just find someone to rally around and I'm really sorry but, Bernie is not going to cut it.

I can open with liking to shoot guns, self sustainability, and an accomplishment that makes conservatives view me as responsible and that I have solid foundational values. Then I can push progressive ideas because it's a dialogue instead of a lecture. Shooting is actually fun and I think that gun control needs to take a massive backseat in the rebuild of DNC. We all want reasonable things like universal background checks, but holy poo poo this issue was given way too much airtime. Mass shootings becoming relatively common is kind of scary and bad, but it still directly impacts relatively few people. American already has 300 million guns floating around, so "control" is already an illusion, almost anyone could get a gun with like 3 days if they felt like it, even in the most restrictive states. A lot of states you can get it in hours. Wallowing in all these mass shootings and focusing on guns at the only real culprit did not help the Dems at all this election season, and likely never will.

In the spirit of getting all of the problems on the table up front, here's something to consider: That changing demographic that Democrats have been waiting on forever now; its relevance and very existence are completely at the mercy of the Census Bureau. The Census Bureau is a part of the Department of Commerce. Trump obviously gets to appoint the Secretary of Commerce. The current term of the Director of the Census Bureau expires in 2018; and Trump then gets to appoint the new Director. The GOP has been out to gut and completely reform the Census Bureau since way before 2010. I don't think there's any reason to pin any hopes on the 2020 Census as providing any relief in future redistriting or elections.

Experience is a mixed bag. It opens you up to attacks based on the record you generate, but having working relationships with ranking party members can make things a lot easier (like fundraising, getting in touch with good comms guys, etc etc). Being able to hit the ground running is supremely important, since people's attention span wanders after a few weeks and then everything bogs down. I mean, lets face it--outside of working the system and maybe one or two policy areas most politicians are pretty goddamn dumb. We elect them based on charisma and perceived "judgement" and their temperament. As long as they can come across as being level-headed and well spoken, that's half the "qualification" right there--as far as voters are concerned. But simply being a fresh-faced (or orange misshapen blob) candidate opens you up to attacks based on naivety and ignorance. Not being aware of how the sausage is made really limits your effectiveness, and gates you from doing the stuff you promised/want to do. There's a reason congress is like 95% lawyers.
