Use the primary gun as a DPS filler between laser shots. If you hit crit spots with the shoulder laser it does a hefty chunk of damage, and the basic kit mod it comes with refills the bar with primary fire gun crits. The secondary fire is only ever worth it, in my opinion, to hit dodgy pilots if you aren't confident in your laser sniping. There may be other uses but it isn't very efficient.
I don't use it very often but after getting to G2 with Ion I'm going to argue that it's not as useless as everyone makes it out to be. The main thing I tend to use it for is when I need extra damage now and not in 5 or so seconds when my laser is up. So like say, a low HP Ronin is all up in my face and I need to get rid of him now and I'm sitting at zero energy. The main thing about it is that while it drains energy, it doesn't actually require it so you can use the laser twice, sit at 0 energy and jam out rounds forever and get the extra damage the whole time. It's still a very niche but I think it occasionally comes in handy.

I hate jacking a battery, then panicking to get out of the smoke, only to land on another enemy titan very near still in the smoke

That's good to know. If you can make it work then don't let me put you down. I just remember being pretty disappointed on my first outing when I spotted a Ronin and dumped a whole bar of alt fire shots when all he had to do was walk directly towards me with his block up and beat me to death.

I hate how non intuitive the animation is. I keep jumping off too early and being without battery or having not given it a team mate.

Yes. I very much wish there was a button prompt for it. I hate when I grapple to my Titan and another Titan walks into my LOS and I mount it instead

Yeah I can definitely see thinking that it's not all that great in that case. The Ronin sword block stops a surprising amount of damage and generally you're better off using the energy on the laser shot if you have half energy or more. Generally I always use the laser if I have the energy to do so, so if I have full energy it's always two laser blasts first, then depending on the situation I either try to peak and poke with the laser and regular splitter rifle shots (by the way I found out that you still get extra energy on crit hits without the Entagled Energy perk, just not as much) to wear them down, or if I'm in an out and out brawl where the only outcome is one of us dies then I'll probably swap to trying to jam my alt-fire splitter rifle into his crit spots at point blank before he can gently caress me up.

E: I should say that I'm mainly posting about the splitter's alt-fire because I don't want people to never try it at all after reading most people saying it's not so good. When and where to use it is something that you really just have to learn for yourself but I feel like it's a very situational but useful tool.

I bought the game based on comments like this, hoping it would fill the Tribes-shaped hole in my heart, but it doesn't feel as satisfying. :(

Also I've yet to successfully get into a CTF match (on the PC), which is a bummer. Slick movement means there should be a flag to move around.

The R201 is the jack of all trades. Decent when hip fired, pretty good at mid range with ADS, and hey you might even get someone at a distance from time to time. Its strength is in flexibility.

This Vince Zampella interview has some... interesting bits.

quote:

Glixel: You've referred to Call of Duty as "your baby." Is it weird to have Titanfall 2 come out so close to the remastering of Modern Warfare?
Vince: It definitely feels a little odd. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is from my old studio, that I built. And they're repackaging my old game that I built, on a brand that I built. So it's kind of like you're throwing it all against me. OK, I can live with it.

Glixel: On top of that, Titanfall 2 was released right after Battlefield 1, a historical military shooter, which is a genre you helped pioneer.
Vince: If the question was, "Would I rather have this window to myself?" Well, of course. I'm not foolish. I'm not foolish that way, anyway. In other ways, probably.

Glixel: But you knew who you were going up against when you chose this window.
Vince: Yes. The exact timing, we didn't know.

Glixel: Do you think you're getting enough support from Electronic Arts? Respawn owns Titanfall, while EA owns Battlefield. You once suggested you were concerned that publishers would put more of their muscle behind the games they own.
Vince: It's always a concern. That's what I'll say. Especially when you have two games on top of each other.

...

Glixel: Will you make another Titanfall game?
Vince: We don't know yet. The game is, critically, a huge success. We're really happy with all the reviews and the positive sentiment. Sales, it's too early to tell. We'd definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe. I think it's pretty safe to assume that we'll explore more of it. EA might have announced more. Devin?
[Devin Bennett, a publicist for Electronic Arts, interjects, "What we've said is we're committed to the franchise."]
Vince: So, whatever the gently caress that means.

Apparently it's bugged at the moment and you're supposed to be able to destroy it from the front by shooting the base but you can't right now. I imagine it'll probably be less aggravating to deal with in a titan when you can just splash the shield to death but I'm gonna miss sitting behind the wall with a charge-hack Charge Rifle and just loving up every titan.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like Titanfall 2 is making the large triple A waves they were hoping for. This isn't just the publisher not being happy about sales like Sega was with Alien: Isolation stating it didn't "meet expectations" but sold incredibly well, this from the developer who's game doesn't have the highest player numbers according to the in-game menus.

It's loving sad if this didn't sell well and Titanfall might be hosed.
