The staff have joked about the fanservice pushing the limits of what they can do in tv, but it's definitely not the kissing that's the problem.

Lupus Rufus posted:Georgi is a sack of poo poo tbh, he's basically passive-aggressively harassing his ex via his skating routine. There's nothing really sympathetic about his arc. From his previous routine to today's routine, it felt like "I am an evil witch who curses you!!" --> "Oh no, I'm so sorry for cursing you! Please pity me and love me and I'll lift the curse", which is like... emotional manipulation 101. Of course, she's having none of it and walked out (YEAAAAH that was also a lowkey satisfying moment in the episode). That's all internal monologue so all he's doing is being sad about his breakup while skating which is pretty funny and I would have left him too but doesn't make him a terrible person or anything

This isn't just someone drawing angry doodles in their diary, this is a major artist making his next public piece of art about how his ex-girlfriend is a piece of poo poo but it's OK because he forgives her, and then premiering it right in front of her. What he's doing is pretty enormously lovely, and he's only a fun character because his giant manchild tantrum is being played for all the cringe comedy it can be.

And from the scenes with Mila, it seems like everyone in their ice skating circle knows about it. It's very public! That's kinda mortifying, and I feel bad for her.

devtesla posted:The staff have joked about the fanservice pushing the limits of what they can do in tv, but it's definitely not the kissing that's the problem. Probably would be because of butts. I mean, there have been "oh, how embarrassing" gay kisses in mainstream anime before as one-off, Naruto kisses Sasuke and both hate it kind of stuff. However the amount of adult butts is probably pushing it. This whole discussion hinges on what's the definition of "popular" is, which I guess is "anime that the majority will actually watch", because I have seen guys kiss on screen before but I watch a lot of things that get the [YAOI] tag in their file names, which implies fujo-bait that most people should vacate, and twelve years ago even something where guys kiss and live with each other but never have an onscreen sex life used to get doomed with that warning tag. Gravitation was certainly stupid, but saved it's sex scenes for the obligatory naughty OVA and had quite a lot of guys kissing during the series. Dramatical Murder had it's hacker dude kiss it's MC in the third episode or so but being based on a sexually explicit VN that was never going to find this size of an audience. Hell, if you want something actually kind of good compared to those two, Love Stage!! was only two years ago, was on TV and the whole setup is two guys who shared a kiss when they were young, with a bunch of gender bending thrown in for good measure. All that stuff didn't have a whole lot going for it beyond dudes making out with dudes, so I understand most of ADTRW missing all of it, but having seen them I have to LOL at the idea that this scene was forced into being framed as it was and wasn't intentional. Anyway, that's my soapbox rant, thank you for letting me have it. I'm at episode 4 now (watching dubbed on this one) and it's still pretty cute.

Some japanese bloggers have stated that the whole censorship issue is bullshit, the show didn't make the kiss explicit because they chose to do it that way, rather than being obligated by law. Either way, with how the scene was framed I can't believe people doubt they did kiss.

Even the media-saturated life of a celebrity still has its moments of privacy.

Yuri's arm being in the way in a show that has such a focus around media and its relationship with celebrity was likely to show the moment as very intimate and meant to be kept between them rather than broadcast everywhere and all.

This show makes me so ridiculously happy. It's really sweet, really cute, really funny and really pretty. I love all the music, and the fact that there's been zero gay panic in the show makes watching it a joy. I like how they've used the proportions of the characters to represent the relationship between Yuri and Victor. Yuri starts out as this out of shape, almost like a little kid still compared to Victor being taller and sculpted like a greek god. They're more like equals now.

Also yea, the joke wasn't 'aw look at him trying', the joke was 'haha look at this impotent baby having an ice-tantrum, no one around him thinks he's the winner here but he's too dumb to see that'. You're super not supposed to like him.

I mean he has said the theme of his skating this season is heartbreak though (the announcer was talking about it), the way yuuri said his was love, so it doesn't seem inconceivable that fans would know what was up? Look at least he's not having an orgasm Everytime he skates unlike some other people we could talk about

Chris needs to step up his games and have multiple orgasms on the ice, perform the skating routine equivalent of tantric sex. Only then will he achieve true mature eros.

someone awful. posted:I mean he has said the theme of his skating this season is heartbreak though (the announcer was talking about it), the way yuuri said his was love, so it doesn't seem inconceivable that fans would know what was up? i mean yes, heartbreak as a theme + their social media posts means essentially anybody could know what's up with his routine. the same is true for any artist who has publicly available information related to their life or w/e. i don't feel like it's a super meaningful point when it's not brought up in the show and could just extend into infinity. more importantly, the content of his art isn't demeaning or slanderous to who it's about so people knowing or being able to sleuth it out doesn't really make the situation worse regardless of people knowing. as for chris, at least he learned to suppress his erections while skating.

The skating stories seemed to emulate other amines. Guang Long's looked very Cowboy Bebop, while Georgi's was super JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (his costume in ep6 screamed JoJo) with its colours and angles. My boyfriend and I binged the first 4 episodes together when that was all there was, and now we watch it every week and love every moment. I have to deal with the fact that he now says that Phichit is his other boyfriend. I've booked us tickets to go ice skating together in December.
