They did say the whole point of having a ringer driver was so it would be the same person every week, otherwise comparative lap times will be meaningless. So I don't know, I think the American might be there to stay, unless they're going to toss out the whole "serious" lap times thing altogether somehow. One of the best bits, by the way: Hammond: "This 918 gets 90 mpg." Clarkson: "Really?" Hammond: "Really." Clarkson: "And who owns Porsche these days?" Hammond: "That would be VW." Clarkson: Been waiting a good long time to see what their take on that whole thing would be. Did not disappoint.

Yeah but it sounds like they immediately hated the logistics and getting the tents set up. They could do 6 shows at the base and the rest at other locations and have the same freedom and anti-BBC vibe. A real track would be great for them to flog on as well.

Holy gently caress what's with that girl's teeth Otherwise it was brilliant, I didn't think the studio bits were any more cringey than some of the old school scripted segments. Plenty of great jokes and car porn as usual.

That was great. Yeah, there were a few cringe-worthy moments, but I felt the same way about the three of them on TG. The producers of Top Gear should just give up now, or completely reinvent their show, because this is better in every way.

Only thing I'll miss is the BBC super music licence that allowed them to use everything under the sun. howe_sam posted:This is why I knew what the result of final timed laps would be, or at least had a pretty good idea. Not sure why Mike Skinner has such a terrible southern accent when he's from California and most interviews I've seen of him he seems pretty 'normal' Loved it. Sure a couple things fell flat, but thoroughly enjoyed it

I really liked it. Perhaps a little forced in places, but it''s still much more the show I want compared to the BBC's new TG. I'm definitely not convinced by the I Can't Believe It's Not Stig racing driver routine, though. As a side note, can we just take a moment to appreciate Carol Vorderman's shirt?

My only real beef with it was that without the unfettered access to music the BBC show had some of the soundtrack felt a bit musak. Otherwise it's a hell of a first episode of anything really.

drunken officeparty posted:I'm not a car person and just watch for pretty cars and goofy british hijinks, but aren't Teslas supposed to be just as good as all these hypercars but also all electric? What's there to be controversial about The last Tesla that Clarkson's Top Gear reviewed was the Roadster, which wasn't as fast as a Model S and didn't have the same range. Like current Teslas, it also tends to be a bit heavier than a similar gas-powered car and can't be refilled in under 5 minutes*. I think Teslas are awesome and probably much nicer to live with than a standard supercar, but they aren't really designed for track use (doing a couple runs at the local dragstrip and then heading home down a twisty road is fine though). *The main controversy came from Top Gear pretending their Tesla ran out of juice and were shown pushing it into the hanger to recharge. Elon Musk pulled the car's telemetry and angrily pointed out that the car never went below 30% charge (or something). Top Gear countered that they were merely trying to demonstrate why you can't spend all day at the track with one but didn't want to actually drain the car (which they could have easily done with a few more laps of "spirited driving") because it would have been very inconvenient to all involved. Then the internet started picking sides and Top Gear didn't review a Tesla again until new Top Gear did the Model X this past season.

Yeah, tesla batteries overheat and cut power within the first lap on most hot laps, it's not a track car. The seven hunnert horsepower P 85D put down the same lightning lap time as the 2012 jeep grand cherokee SRT-8 on the faster track config. Slower than a mini cooper JCW. I can't imagine clarkson would gloss over that fact.

keevo posted:I thought it was funny at first but just kept going on and on. I am curious as to how they were able to get the Ferrari the Ferrari, the P1, and the Spyder on the same track and racing against each other. I thought none of the manufacturers would allow it? Ferrari, in particular are very demanding when it comes to media on their cars. They famously "don't advertise" instead promote their brand via car shows/mags/website review their cars combined with the F1 team for media exposure. This has led to certain amounts of "gaming the system" when providing cars, Chris Harris writes about it very well here. http://jalopnik.com/5760248/how-ferrari-spins So my guess.... They managed to get Ferrari to agree to provide a car on the proviso that it "will not lose a drag race". I found it very hard to believe that with launch control on all three, they couldn't produce repeatable results (but hell they made it look believable with the cars throwing themselves around). The laptimes ..... poo poo, dunno. I know Porsche were up for a go anytime anywhere, Mclaren were keen as long as Ferrari didn't cheat, Ferrari were game if they could cheat. Really wasn't expecting them to be slower. Then again the closeness of it, might of meant that Ferrari agree to release the lap times (hence the delayed reveal). I loved the show, it had it's misses but ultimately they captured the passion for cars that we all have perfectly in that opening sequence.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought the episode had some issues. The air force fight was just cringy, the vignetting was turned up to 11, and I'm honestly not a huge fan of the new track. I'm sure as gently caress going to watch next week, the intro was amazing, and I'm glad we got to see the three Hypercars finally. I laughed out loud honestly a couple of times, which isn't common for me. Nonetheless, it's great to have them back on the air, and I'm sure they'll get back into stride.
