Lol at that crown avatar for a guy furiously defending the honour of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha name in a PYF silly names thread. You bought that for yourself, didn't you?

People who are really really into the British royal family is the weirdest phenomenon. I'm Canadian, and we have more than our our fair share of them since technically the Queen is our head of state. It's a bit odd to find it here, though, since the usual demographic of HELLO! magazine addicts is women in their 50s and 60s, which is NOT the primary demographic for these forums.

What kills me about names like these is that his name is actually Richard. He could be Rick Swett, or Rich Swett, or he could have maintained the full dignity of Richard Swett. But he chose - he CHOSE - to be called Dick Swett. My parents have a friend named Dick Johnson. He's a stern, kind of scary military dude so I never had the gumption to go up to him and say BUT WHY, UNCLE DICK?! but I've always wondered.

I'm not knocking or defending anyone, just stating facts. The name of the UK's present royal dynasty is The House of Windsor. The "Saxe-Coburg-Gotha" name is only used now by the German ducal house Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, came from. But like all German royal and noble titles, they were all formally abolished after the war. Yes, of course I bought the avatar myself; so what? From the point of view of an American, such a system does have certain advantages, which I find fascinating. And for the record, I'm a democratic socialist.

Just so you know, you're doing a super, super good imitation of someone who believes that the monarchy is in place because of the divine right of kings, is wholly unproblematic, and must never in any way be challenged. If that's not what you're going for, it's probably time to revise your approach to communication.

Point taken, but I try to look at all perspectives from the outsider's point of view. It's said that there are two sides (or more) to every story, but facts themselves are neutral. As far as the advantages of any given system of government, it wouldn't survive long if it wasn't working on some level. But something that works well for one society may be unsuitable for another. Recent efforts to impose American-style democracy in the middle east is a good example of this. Divine right? An entity that doesn't exist can't bestow favor onto anyone.

My spouse took a contract awhile ago doing some clerical stuff for an environmental organization. One of his jobs was to compile the names of the government officials in charge of wastewater management for various American municipalities. My favourites were Grover Baguette and Randy Poindexter but there are a lot of amazing names in the public service in small-town America. A LOT.

I grew up in an area with a lot of odd Polish last names, and I generally try to pronounce names I come across online, but I don't know where to begin with that one.

I think Fnu has come up in this thread before. The person probably has only one name, and FNU (first name unknown) is one of the ways that gets dealt with in a society where at least two names are expected.
