time capsule is gone too as part of this - i guess time machine will be removed from macOS in a few updates?quote:The central reason for abandoning the AirPort line appears to focus mainly on its small revenue gains in comparison to the company's more lucrative products, like the iPhone. Apple includes its routers in the "other products" category of its annual financial results, a section which generated $11.1 billion in fiscal 2016, or about 5 percent of the company's total sales. this is pretty hosed up with the automation guy leaving, plus the now the routers are going - the apple ecosystem is being destroyed to focus on what, phones? how is the company hiring people like crazy yet running into issues keeping small teams around? do they not get that the whole tightly integrated ecosystem was one of the key competitive advantages apple had? or are we all just gonna buy 2TB icloud accounts now and backup into the

lol this is such a loving stupid move. Apple features are a pure crapshoot on anything but the airport. after I moved AirPrint wasn't working. first I found out that the firmware update that my router did while I was setting it up automatically blocked Bonjour multicast. re-enabling that allowed it to work on wired devices but wireless was still not working. turns out that many netgear APs just silently drop all mDNS requests over wifi and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it short of loading dd-wrt onto it. also killing time machine is a giant gently caress you to anyone who isn't able to use the like someone on a slow or metered connection.

also, i mean, icloud is not offensively overpriced on storage, and it is certainly better backup than another device in the same house, but it is hardly cheap or fast compared to just offloading stuff onto a disk in another room
