Bomb(s) was probably irrelevant given it was still running flight ops days later, but you're right that the torpedo hit may have caused complications. For instance, if it opened up a fuel storage area, combined with the fleet losing those 2 oilers(probably the only two in the fleet), and you have a carrier that's going to be running out of oil fast with no way to replenish it. Not something that would show up right away, but would still doom the ship several days later if they can't effect another solution. Alternatively, it ran into some sort of weather that tore the torpedo hole open again.

There weren't reports of heavy damage, though. Fog of war means we have no idea how the wounded CVs did, especially with USN damage control.

Damage from a torp + systems damage from limping from hex to hex with zero fuel is enough to sink a carrier. In theory anyway. i81icu812 fucked around with this message at 07:36 on Nov 25, 2016 |

Yeah, this one is deep in the fog of war - I'm just assuming that some Intel guy was reading the published allied casualty list.

Is there any way it could have lost its air group without itself sinking (i.e. does the game model tossing the planes overboard for whatever emergency reason)?

There is one more clue that something unexpected happened: the Allied Ships Lost counter increased by one. Perhaps Grey managed to sink a ship that isn't in the update, or perhaps it's the Enterprise. When do you get the points, anyway - when the ship is claimed sunk or confirmed sunk?

It's possible Grey got full points for the Enterprise, but lost some base points somewhere, since the game seems to randomly change base point values at various dates. He did hit a lot of cargo ships the lasf week, though, so two or three of them going down with cargos of planes could happen too.

Are any cargo ships more efficient plane haulers than escort carriers? I imagine it's a volume thing rather than mass.

There are carrier capable squadrons that you can load onto a carrier at a port and they can take off from a carrier, but they aren't carrier trained so they take like 90% operational losses if you ask them to land on a carrier. Lots of Marine squadrons are in this category.

Another advantage of transporting aircraft on a carrier is they are ready to fly at the destination. If you use a cargo ship they have to be reassembled over several days at their destination.

We take out another oiler. We also make several unsuccessful attack runs here. They have a lot of oilers in the area. Another quiet day. We do get a new carrier though, making good our losses. Ha. Ha. Is good joke.

Why does that carrier only carry 18 torpedoes? It seems like a pathetically limited number, given the size of the ship.

Leperflesh posted:Why does that carrier only carry 18 torpedoes? It seems like a pathetically limited number, given the size of the ship. It's a pretty small carrier, and barely has the speed and deck length to launch a small number of torpedo bombers parked as far back as possible. Most likely wouldn't have anywhere near 18 torpedo bombers onboard aside from ferrying duties; maybe 6 or 9 would be onboard for combat duties. It also might not have had the magazine space to hold more torpedoes.

One of our subs takes some hits at Pearl after missing its destroyer target. The Betties get a tanker hit. The Nell's get their own. We continue to hammer away in China. Enemy attacks at Chunking are getting more regular, but no less futile. We hit a couple more ships and killed some more Chinese. A normal day.
