The only diesels I've ever driven are the Mercedes turbodiesels in the ML and GL, and those both seemed pretty goddamn good, although I haven't driven them a whole lot.

Diesels are great in big heavy cruisers coupled with automatic transmissions. Low relaxing revs, plenty torque and good milage. It just seems to be a polarizing engine type. Some proponents just looking at stats and thinking they are fun performance engines (they arn't), while some think they are rolling smogmachines with no place anywhere after the vw fiasco.

They can be fun when properly specced. The 5.0 in the titan XD makes it go pretty good, and would do even better in something that wasn't 8000lbs. On the flip side, the 3.0 in the ram 1500 is slow as baaaaaaaaaalls, but that engine seems way under-specced for the weight. I would enjoy my 7.3 quite a bit more if i had more control over the transmission. I can force a shift by staying at half throttle through first and flooring it on the shift, but that's not as much fun. Locking up in forth happens at about 70kph which is 10 over most speed limits here. Once locked the truck will happily do 900rpm down the road at 60kph, but if it drops a little bit below the trans unlocks. The manual would be more fun and get better fuel economy even if it wasn't faster by the numbers. That said it is an engine designed to move a school bus in a 5800lb truck. Obviously with the CX5, the turbo gas engine would be preferable, but they said they're not doing that, so i would think the diesel would be a consolation prize as long as you're ready to tune out the emissions stuff and deal with it being more expensive in the long run. The tune also seems to bring it up to about 230hp/375ft/lbs, which is probably enough.

Old man had a 335d, at least until someone sideswiped him. RIP 335d, you were a blast, especially on the on ramp. I only wish it had lasted long enough to tune it.

I haven't driven a 335d, but the 3.0TDI Audi uses is a blast and they should have thrown it in an A4 here. In wagon form I definitely would have gotten one over my Golf even though it would have been fuckoff expensive.

Quick Draw McGraw posted:Sort of. Porsche also designed their peocesses to be super flexible so they can do custom stuff more easily If you're charging Porsche prices, that covers for a lot of direct manufacturing and supply chain inefficiency. It's not even that they designed their processes to be super flexible relative to other OEMs - all lines are highly modular and flexible now. Honda or Toyota could certainly offer a diversity of options as standalone from a manufacturing standpoint. If you're turning out 225,000 cars on a global basis, and your customers don't care about lead times, and your customers will pay $350 to get yellow seatbelts, you're already a lot closer to bespoke manufacturing.

Most people want a car today which is why dealerships take up entire zipcodes and the supply chain is built to churn out all the white/silver/black mid-optioned models the world can bear

OK, maybe if your car just got totaled in a wreck and it's buy now or pay rental prices for weeks, but otherwise, what's the rush? As long as I have a driveable car to fall back on, I'd rather wait to get exactly what I want than pick something off the lot and spend years wishing I'd been able to get that one neat color or option. I have bought three new cars in my life and each time, I took several weeks after the test drive to think long and hard about what I wanted, then ordered the car, then waited weeks or months for it to arrive.

I have bought three new cars in my life and each time, I took several weeks after the test drive to think long and hard about what I wanted, then ordered the car, then waited weeks or months for it to arrive. Is it because you're more likely to get a good price on something already sitting on a dealer's lot, or that 90+% of people don't actually care about cars or colors because they aren't able to derive any amount of joy from driving their car, or only care about owning a luxury brand to show people they own one? Don't ask me man, when I buy new I pick out exactly the car with the color and options I want then as long as the dealer offers what I was willing to pay for it I buy it. Getting not-perfect color/options in favor of a good deal on a car I couldn't otherwise afford is how I ended up with a silver automatic Corvette from ebay.

Yeah, I think most people just really don't care that much. That, and dealers prey on the instant gratification of driving away in your new car right now! Us AI types that know exactly what we want, no more and no less, and are willing to wait for it are definitely in the minority.
