I haven't liked anything of theirs since Days of Grays (I was in high school ok), but I saw Sonata Arctica live for the first time a few nights ago and had a drat blast. They played mostly new poo poo but everyone either had bad taste or left their pride at the coat check because the crowd all sang along anyway. Mostly I was just there for Full Moon and they delivered so all was good in the end.

Basically it made the socially isolated 16 year old in me happy and I recommend indulging that kid once in a while, it's great.

Less great was the idiot trying to start Nazi chants between songs during one of the openers. What the hell dude

Clayman is their best record by far and is the transition point between melodic death metal and whatever they are now.
Whoracle, Jester Race and Colony are good, but they are also kinda indistinguishable from one another. I have issues pinpointing which song belong to which of them, which is something I don't have with Clayman.
Same goes for their latter albums.

Ya I totally agree with those three albums sounding very samey. They were a lot heavier but pretty much followed the same pattern except a few songs. Also I don't own any of the earlier albums and the versions I've heard online sound badly produced. Maybe those songs were uploaded with low bitrate or maybe not official versions I don't know the cause.

Ok just got to listen to Harwired... and yeah, it's not terrible. Most of the first disc was in car so I'd probably need to do a more critical take later, but Spit out the Bone was definitely the highlight.

On the other hand this is what I thought of DM and I haven't listened to it since the month of its release so we'll see.

This is a couple weeks ago but I'm digging that Nevesis album a lot, reminds me of early 90s Kyuss without falling into the nostalgia trap like a lot of bands. The first half of the Churchhouse Creepers album is great but I lost interest halfway through, probably owing to the repetitiveness. Thanks for posting these.
You're welcome. :) I like them both a lot, but Churchhouse Creepers just about manages to inch into the #1 spot for me. I see what you mean about the repetitiveness, I just don't mind because it's hella good repetition. Also the last song is a helluva good album closer.

This is another definite standout from the stuff I've discovered there:

The funny thing about In Flames and death metal in general was that I listened to Clayman, then heard their versions of Pallar Anders Visa and Hargalåten (which are traditional Swedish folk music songs) and realized that Swedish folk music tunes are something that is a thing in early In Flames records (after Lunar/Subterranean). So I basically started listening due to death metal due to folk music. We should talk more about the corrupting influence of folk music in other words.
If you can't tell the difference between Jester Race and Colony songs you are literally braindead and Michael Schiavo needs to pull the plug

They begin again

Took me a while but I finally listened to the new Mithras and it's a drat fine death metal record. The production is so much better than anything in their past and the textures! The loving textures man! They weave together riffs and spacey melodies in a beautiful way. It's a wall of sound but not in the typical compressed everything at 11 stuffed into your ears way. I love these dudes.

I remember having Worlds Beyond the Veil in my car for the longest time when I was younger and finally getting into weirder more dense metal. There's some kind of nostalgia there that feels great.

I actually think it's really great. There's a lot of vocal variety in it and the drums are really, really good. Some of the riffs could be better overall, but there's definitely some great moments throughout the nine tracks.

I liked all of Okoi's clean vocals. There's different approaches he takes and it hits me the same way that Akercocke uses them, although maybe in a more experimental tone. Either way, the record crushes, particularly the title track.

My personal favourite is still Metallica's '89 Seattle performance included on the Binge & Purge DVD. They're still all playing with the tightness and energy they used to have (also James is still running on multiple bottles of whisky per night) and it makes for an amazing show.

Also watching it, no wonder Jason's neck became permanently hosed.
