But if you want to teach history as something more than a bunch of facts, regurgitated during an exam and then quickly flushed down the memory hole, you're going to want to come up with a way to invoke sympathy and make things personal - because people are not in fact sympathetic or empathetic to strangers in the past by default, no matter how horrific an ordeal they went through. The monkey sphere and all that. So whether ponies, or "your family and friends", whatever it takes.

The entire reason these self-checkout and self pumping and self-whatever thing is to offload the employees' work onto the customers. It's not for the customer's convenience (though that might be a side effect for things that are open 24/7 as a result), it's entirely because it allows to reduce labor costs by removing "pointless" jobs. I'm not arguing for ludditism and sabotaging all these robots to get back ARE JOBS, but I want people to be honest and admit that these things exist only and purely to remove jobs. Anything else they allow is a bonus. And no, the manufacturing and maintenance of all these automats is not going to compensate. Mitigate, perhaps, but not compensate. The cartoon is pretty good IMO. It shows someone whose jobs were taken by robots, who blames Mexicans and other immigrants instead. Remember when everybody laughed at Trump's promise to bring back from China jobs that don't exist anymore anyway? That's what this cartoon is. The real solution is to move away from a society model where jobs is how people earn their living. Universal minimal income.

That's an indictment of the whole of humanity and a lot more relevant than "lol bronies can't even relate on an emotional level to the holocaust". Ask people studying the holocaust or military history about how it takes work to identify with the people they study and the enormity of what happened and how frequently they have their own tricks to do it and to properly understand what's going on rather than mentally flattening it to an emotionless number. That they each have their own tricks that at best are passed down from teacher to student goes to show how weird and distorted an idea people get of this, because a lot of people don't have the benefit of those tricks. It's similar to how, without prompting, most people read through survivors' narratives and don't really get that their gut is right, that there sure are a bunch of close calls, and getting lucky in all those ways is unlikely. Of course the survivors have close calls where they got lucky because if they didn't get lucky they wouldn't be survivors writing down their accounts, now would they?

I'd be kinda worried about mobile banking trends if I were working a part time teller position, but It doesn't look like there's been a decline in opportunities over the time frame the guy would be looking at. Unless he's supposed to be a young guy in Oregon. Comic's fine, the point is the guy's an idiot for blaming immigrants for the loss of those jobs, and it gets that across by pointing out changes to our everyday lives that have little to do with immigration.

Thanks. This is exactly what I was hinting at when I said looking up people that I may be related to that were killed truly changed the way I viewed the Holocaust. Nothing like hearing the stories of people that not only look like you but share your name to cement the true horror of it all.

You know, on the one hand I can kind of, KIND OF, see how someone who's naive and not politically motivated or informed could get a helping hand from a big ol' cartoon horse, with its exaggerated facial and body expressions, to facilitate understanding of how horrible something is. Not to joke about autism or anything but reading facial expressions or body language doesn't come easy for everybody. On the other hand, the moment you call yourself a "student of history", you lose any right to not get mocked for stating that a cartoon horse helped you understand the Holocaust. But then, on the other other hand, "student of history" is right up there with "citizen of the world" and "style over substance" to form the Holy Trinity of the pantheon of things idiots that think they're smart say.

At least to me, it's real easy to have that sort of thing register as a (picture of the Holocaust) rather than as a (picture of probably 30 people who would suffer greatly and likely die during the Holocaust), and registering it as the latter makes a big difference for impact, so I've got some hope at least.
