Unfortunately there's only a handful of survivors http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/11/29/503698754/charter-plane-crashes-in-colombia-killing-76 What a horrific scenario. May they play in footy heaven with Cruyff.

There were five survivors, two players (originally three, but one of them succumbed from the injuries). The plane also had journalists on it - the guy calling the Youtube I posted was one of the victims, unfortunately. Grêmio and Inter idol and Fox Sports commentator Mário Sérgio also died in the crash. { Chapecoense's first international final. Holy poo poo.

Simone Poodoin posted:Several Brazilian Serie A clubs have asked to protect Chapecoense from relegation for the next 3 seasons They've also asked to have them be able to have all their loan players for free while they rebuild. Hopefully this keeps them from going bankrupt at the very least. Palmeiras has also asked to wear Chapecoense's kit for the last game of the season (which they just won...by beating Chapacoense last week). I guess since I mentioned him, I'm gonna take a minute to talk a bit about Mário Sérgio, probably one of the most underrated players in Brazilian history. Dude was before my time, but like every good Grêmio supporter, I watched the tape of our match against Hamburg for the Intercontinental Cup and he DESTROYED the Germans. He played a handful of games for Grêmio and still became an idol in the club - even though he was already an idol for our rival Internacional, as a member of the squad that went undefeated in 1979 to win the national championship. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl9xuvOJIpU He did Ronaldinho's thing before Ronaldinho, his nickname was Vesgo (cross-eyed) because he looked in one direction but passed to the other side. A pretty astounding player in a time where Brazil had some of the best talent it ever had - Falcão, Zico, Rivellino, Paulo César, Sócrates, amongst others - and one that made the shortlist for the 82 squad, still considered one of the best in our country's history. The main reason why he didn't go further in his football career was lack of discipline and a nasty attitude. He became a coach after retiring and was working as a commentator for Fox Sports since last year, which is why he was on Chapecoense's plane. It's another great loss for Brazilian football on top of Chapecoense's brilliant campaign being cut short, and I think one most international fans won't hear much about, so I decided to share a bit.

Reports are coming in saying that CONMEBOL decided to do the right thing and award Chape the Sudamericana title, which means they get to play in the Copa Libertadores next year. It also means they'll play Atletico Nacional in the next Recopa, which will probably be the most emotional match you'll ever see.

joepinetree posted:And then you get Internacional's president speaking publicly. Like, even though I'm a Grêmio supporter and being able to make fun of Fernando Carvalho is my God-given right, I think everything got a bit blown out of proportion when it comes to his interview. Yeah, he made very unfortunate comments, self-centered thoughts in a moment you really shouldn't be self-centered. On the other hand, he apologized for it in a question of minutes and I cannot imagine he's been thinking of much lately other than "gently caress, I might be the guy to finally relegate Internacional, gently caress". Of course people should call him out on being an idiot, but it kinda became a witch hunt and even led to outright fake narratives about Internacional not giving a drat about Chapecoense's grief. Newspapers were sharing a story about the dirigents REFUSING to host a wake for one of their former players and Grêmio accepting it, while it was actually more his father having closer relationships with Grêmio's dirigents and them offering the stadium first.
