Pattonesque posted:even better the only way they do foreshadow it is that "when a Mass Relay is destroyed it is a solar system-killing event" Yah this was pretty lmao The bioware defense force did a bunch of mental gymnastics to show that if you destroyed them THIS way that wouldn't happen but there was nothing in game to convince anyone. Just a terrible terrible ending in so many ways.

The only problem with the mass relays blowing up in the original ending to ME3 is that they didn't have cutscenes showing most galactic civilization getting incinerated, which allowed them to walk back on this later.

I thought they sort of did in the low-assets ending. I think the idea was that the giant space gun was less stable since it got more dinged up on the way to the Citadel but it was all very fuzzy.

In the worst Destroy ending the Crucible blast pretty much glasses Earth. It's safe to assume that the chain reaction spreading through the relay network would cause significant to complete destruction.

Either way, "keeping the relays vs. not keeping the relays" would have been a much more coherent moral framework than "maybe some robots will die" and was more relevant within the context of all three games.

here's a thing: given that FTL is relatively limited to systems within a few, say, weeks of travel time between systems, there could theoretically be a whole 'nother relay system that doesn't intersect with the current relay system at all you could have two separate galactic societies in the same galaxy developing completely independently of one another makes u think

Didn't the devs try and retcon some poo poo about FTL travel without the relays being effective enough to connect the remaining civs or something? I swear I remember this.

No, the embarassing Bioware retcon was that Joker crash-landed on Earth.

Eh. weren't they saying before launch of ME3 that while they would probably continue to make ME games Shep's story was over and they would either be prequel's super far in the future or in another galaxy.

Bioware Knew Edit: they also killed 2/3 of those approaches with the poo poo plot of ME3. No one would care about a prequel and a future sequel would have been impossible to reconcile.

Shep merges with the Reapers but it goes awry and they all explode and take out the relay network and then the explosion merges all people with machines or whatever dumb bullshit that was, and then JC Denton comes back from his nap in Antarctica why not.

exquisite tea posted:Either way, "keeping the relays vs. not keeping the relays" would have been a much more coherent moral framework than "maybe some robots will die" and was more relevant within the context of all three games. I always thought, since part of the point was that the relays were preprogrammed and also forcibly shut things down outside certain scenarios, that it would be a lot more clever if the Crucible was just a hundred cycles' attempts at reprogramming the Relays, turning the safeties off so to speak so that the actual superweapon was "literally anything with an engine and a navigation computer pointed at the honking robots". Maybe have one shaped like Shepard's fist for aiming at Harbinger. The moral endings then would be whether or not, after you use ten trillion asteroids with thrusters to ftl-murder the Reapers, galactic society puts this aside and uses this newfound power to expand to the rest of the galaxy instead of their limited positions, or if they start pointing the asteroids at each other and start a super cold war. It's still not great but at least it's not a magic wave. quote:gently caress dude, I just want Glen Cook to write for any game at this point. I don't even remember what I was gonna say about Lt. Dan's posts now except "lol" because I'm just thinking about how many reapers would get killed by shepard just because they were politically in the way instead of some dumb "save the universe" bullshit. I should really read his sci-fi stuff, Black Company's great and Dread Empire's pretty good too though the last one was kind of crap. A Buff Gay Dude posted:Citadel was just as dissonant in tone as the ending compared to the "reapers killing the entire galaxy" ongoing main plot, but at least it wasn't retarded garbage. The Citadel DLC was the only 100% for fun just goofing around DLC, and it turned out the tone worked better than what most of the games were. That DLC was basically playing an 80s action movie with the mass effect characters.
