Dallas is eating the headlines and despite the win streak, the Giants aren't winning all that convincingly. They are winning though, and they are winning games that they'd lose last year. The defense is legit good, the offense has problems which is why we aren't blowing people out.

I very much doubt that, given that they'll be 9-4 and the New York press will be eager to talk about how this year's Giants are just like the 2011 squad. Part of the issue is that every Giants win outside of Cleveland has been a one-score affair where the Giants didn't look great, even against inferior competition. A strong win against Pittsburgh will make a case otherwise.

That said, I don't think they'll beat Pittsburgh convincingly

The GIants currently share a lot of parallels with the season the Rangers just had in MLB. They finished with the best record in the American League but had an almost even run differential. This was because they set a major league record for victories in one run games. Folks were pointing out this simply wasn't sustainable, the Rangers weren't as good as their record would have you believe, and Cole Hamels' struggles down the stretch were cause for concern. They ended up getting swept by the Jays in the ALDS and Hamels pitched like poo poo in Game 1.

The Giants are 8-3 with a defense that's been getting progressively better as the season's gone along and OBJ's been having a great year. But they just finished a stretch of winning games against several weak teams, they're middle of the pack in passing, and near bottom of the league in rushing. They're not supposed to be able sustain the win pace they're on with their lopsided offense and near-even +/-.

That being said if they beat Pittsburgh or Dallas in the next couple weeks they'll start getting loads of credit. And FWIW I'm scared of facing them in the postseason because I can FULLY see Eli engaging his Playoff Bullshit Mode against the Cowboys mediocre secondary, throw a couple of dick-punch touchdown passes to OBJ and Cruz, and the Giants defense slows down the Dallas offense just enough for them to win a close game and advance.

I never understand why people apply historical runs to current present day situations. The only person left from 2007's run is Eli and JPP/Cruz from the other run. It's a completely different team with a completely different head coach and has zero bearing whatsoever in what happened in past years. They weren't even high-variance in 2007 or 2011 either, their starts were completely due to being the most injured team in football both those years.

I never said they were like the 2011 team, only that the press would make that leap because that's what they do and because fans want to believe that this year's Giants will make a Super Bowl run.

This year's Giants are clearly a different beast, but still dangerous because of what they've got and how hard it is to evaluate them even at this point in the season. Are they an elite defense? I doubt it, but the pass rush has improved since the start of the season. Are they really dangerous on offense? Absolutely, if you let OBJ get big plays on you (and it's hard to prevent that, even if he is the only truly scary weapon on the team). They're exactly the type of team that can beat the Cowboys in a "whoever has the ball last with 1+ minute wins" type game, similar to Washington and Pittsburgh.

I think the Giant's defense is legit this year but the offense surprisingly isn't. The complete lack of run game will probably down them later on in the season and during bad weather games. ODB is just so drat good but they need another seam stretcher. Shepard is an underneath only guy right now and Cruz is a wheel route/sluggo runner sideline guy. That'll also hurt once they start running into teams with competent linebacker and nickel coverage.

Either way I think the Cowboys are a better team right now and maybe the Redskins too once they can figure out why their defense is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

That's a fair assessment. I think the Giant's defense is alright, but not elite. I could be wrong, but I always expected the GIants' offseason spending to pay off more next year than this year. This weekend's game will be really telling in terms of how good the defense is.

Washington is hard to figure out right now. I think they're good on offense, but the defense is Jekyll and Hyde because like the rest of the NFC East, they alternate between playing teams with great offenses and teams with garbage offenses and little in-between

Yeah I looked up the Redskin's schedule and they faced the following in order of QBs: Roethlisberger (38 points), Dak (27), Eli (27), Kessler(?) (20), Flacco (10), Wentz (20), Stafford (20), Dalton(27), Bradford (20), Rodgers (24), Dak (31). They seem to play to their level of competence faced.

Giants defense has gotten loads better since they can stop the run. Pass rush is there even if it's not getting sacks. Landon Collins might be DPOY too.

Since week 7 we've gotten the most sacks and INTs. Granted, that was when we started playing the soft spot of the schedule, but the defense is getting that pressure now.

People are too attached to the Jerry narrative to realize that Stephen Jones does most of the management these days

The last really bad Jerry move was trading for Roy Williams back in 2008.

Signing Greg Hardy was awful from a "why would you sign this piece of poo poo" standpoint, but from a football standpoint it was p much all upside. They shouldn't have done it, but it wasn't a stupid move.

The Redskins defense is Jekyll and Hyde because it plays hard but the front 7 still is way short on talent. Kerrigan is the only above average talent among the front seven, and he's not a star. Playing hard all game up front with good secondary support is good enough to control bad offenses, but you need more talent to control the good offenses.

Now if the Redskins were able to make a huge defensive investment like the Giants just did this year... but they can't. All the money is going to go to sign Captain Kirk long term. So it's going to require some luck with middle draft picks.
