Why would you even have a Roomba at a vet's office?

What kinda hosed up pattern is that. Do roombas just go in random directions in the hope that eventually they'll cover the entire floor?

Watch Roomba for a short time (it's hard not to) and you might think it's following a completely random pattern. Most of the time it is! According to one of iRobot's original patents for the Roomba, the optimum way for a robot to clean a room is to use a combination of two main patterns: "wall following" (where it moves around the walls of your room, using its side-mounted, flailing brush to clean right into corners) and "random bounce" (where it cleans until it hits an obstacle, then moves off again in a random direction). The original Roombas (like the model 560 pictured here) seem to use several different cleaning modes, including sweeping across a room at speed to clean large areas, spiraling outward to cover larger spaces, and repeatedly retracing over areas that are particularly dirty (there's a flash of Roomba's bright blue "dirt detect" light to let you know when this happens) http://www.explainthatstuff.com/how-roomba-works.html

Powaqoatse posted:Welp It's not about covering the area most efficiently. It's about continuous cleaning all day. The robot's got all the time in the world, so it doesn't care that it will take 10x as long to vacuum the floor as it would for you to do it, if it's doing it autonomously while you're at work. I know a guy who has two big dogs. One (or both?) of his dogs was sick, and had diarrhea. He watched helplessly and horrified through a security camera remotely while he was at work of his dog spraying liquid poop all over the tile, and then his Roomba (that he only had for 2 weeks prior) fire up and spread it all across the house. He threw the Roomba away immediately, and had to spend hours cleaning up a fine glaze of doggy diarrhea from every flat surface the Roomba could travel on.

canyoneer posted:He threw the Roomba away immediately, and had to spend hours cleaning up a fine glaze of doggy diarrhea from every flat surface the Roomba could travel on. That's the exact reason I'll never get one. Too bad, too, because my entire main floor is hardwood or vinyl, so perfect for a Roomba to clean. But I've got a dog and two cats, and although none of them have had accidents in the house so far*, It'd be tempting fate, I feel like. *Not counting the few times the dog has gotten into the basement and poo poo there, but the Roomba wouldn't be cleaning the basement, anyway. And it's clear to us that the only reason he shits there is because the catss litter boxes are down there, and he likely felt some need to "mark" that territory as his, or something. Since we've put a gate to the stairs down there, he hasn't pissed or poo poo on the floors.

Every single horror story about roombas I've heard has involved pet accidents, which leads me to wonder why people with pets think it's a good idea to get them. Then I watch the videos of the cat in a shark costume again and all makes sense in the world.

I've been seeing commercials for a Samsung roomba-style vacuum that uses a camera to scan the layout of the area and does a more methodical cleaning than Roomba's "bounce around like an idiot" method. It will even return to its docking station to recharge after it's done. Seems kinda neat and I kinda want one.

Agree on helping with pets. We have five animals because we are loving nuts and the Roomba scoops up SOOOO much hair. Makes it that much easier to clean the house, plus I get to watch it vacuum around my dog who gives no fucks when it bounces off her head.
