Time for some thrilling heroics.
I just got screwed hard on a Guardian run. Great run going, tons of health, good items. I get into a room with one of the worms that pop up out of the body. Well he never shows his head and my retarded heart keeps walking into him so I teleported out with a boss card. Boss is daddy long legs and stomps constantly without showing his body so there went that run.

Argh.

Unless I'm mistaken, damaging the legs on Daddy Longlegs or Triachnid damages the boss overall.

Yeah, the armored worms are annoying. They seem to be reluctant to pop out if you're close to them. Punching Bag may mess up their scripting there. But they can be damaged for a split second after they spawn or the room starts. It's a similar issue to what the knights had in the original Isaac, that they "fixed" by making the knights invulnerable for a second after they spawn.

Yeah I think punching bag screwed that room up. I was damaging daddy long legs but I literally only got a third of his health down before he stomped the poo poo out of me. Ah well.

I think I only have 3 challenges left. Putting off Keeper because jesus half the runs I do with him and a devil room pops I always see a brimstone and cry.

Definately. Apart from anything else I think that basic +1 HP items should only really spawn if you start to empty an item pool. I'm fine with +1 Heart Container with + damage or luck or whatever, but while those items exist "Breakfast" or whatever will always be a super disappointing boss reward. Not only are the strictly inferior to other items with the same effect AND an extra, but they are also boring as hell. I'm not saying they arent ever useful, but they are never exciting to see. Its a pipe dream really, they arent going to massively redo the item tables/rarities at any point, but in a hypothetical Isaac 2 I'd like to see a lot of the "same but worse" items dropped. Consumables too, there are a hell of a lot of them that basically just reveal the map (and sometimes a secret room), and most of them are strictly inferior to the Sun card which shows the map AND heals you.

and I don't see any reason why they can't redo the rarities for this game.

The biggest thing I would want changed is pills and curses, because they suck and are boring. Fundamentally many pills effectively do nothing because nobody on earth takes unknown pills while fighting rooms-paralysis is meaningless, addicted is meaningless, etc. Especially addicted, which literally does nothing in the latter half of the game, and functionally does nothing in the former half. And then most curses are annoying without meaningful or interesting gameplay repercussions-who cares about curse of darkness, and who likes curse of the maze?

If pills are going to have a negative effect that isn't a lasting character change ala stat pills it should be something like "guaranteed champions in the next room", or "take double damage for the whole floor"-they need to persist beyond the room you use them in to do anything at all. But honestly I think besides maybe a couple of pills, pills are better off being just stat upgrades/downgrades-I enjoyed pills much more when most of them were that. And as far as I'm concerned, the only curses which should not be thrown out are curse of the labyrinth/curse of the unknown. Maybe also curse of the blind.

I think the only thing that could save the Darkness effect is something like... having it apply on a room-by-room basis, and rooms which are dark generally contain something which also produces light. ex: firefly enemies which you are incentivized to kill last to keep their light around ala Metroid, or lamp objects which break after a few shots(or just turn up the light fires make a bit). In that case, though, something needs to be done about the "you can just turn up the gamma" aspect.

The Darkness curse would have to be more like the Spelunky version where rooms are generally blacked out but there are light sources including around the player character. I don't mind curses adding difficulty to the game, even a large amount of difficulty, but having them just waste your time and not actually do anything meaningful is bad.

LazyMaybe

Right, like Spelunky or some Zelda games you could have a very small ring around you with fine visibility, then a larger ring where you have some visibility but it's darkened, and then beyond that just blackness-but then fires and some enemies can make their own light rings.
Both the yellow fly enemies could be light sources, and there could be a fatter slower one with more HP to serve as a more convenient enemy to keep alive for light.

Well after a while of not playing I just started a game and got Hurts So Good, and then a cursed object (not sure what it was) that spawns The Tower card effect around me.

It's hilarious, because every single time anything hits me I pinball around the room gaining health from all the explosions, taking damage from enemies to only cause more. Complete easy mode but ridiculously amusing.

That's...what he's saying?

If you enter a locked room by any means other than unlocking it, by teleporting or bombing in from a secret room or having curse of the maze put you in, and then leave through the door that should be locked, it stays open. You have to leave through the door though, otherwise it'll remain locked if you try to go back in the normal way.

Strangely enough that's how I read the post at first also: that you can somehow get locked into a room because you got mazed in without unlocking the room first. They're actually saying it unlocks the room for you.

Before that I'd just restart whenever I had poo poo stat eden and had to fight something like ragman or dark monstro, gently caress 3 minute bossfights on the first 2 floors.

Oh man, I actually managed to get to Satan and so nearly beat him before he killed me in the last second. It took me so long to get there...I don't know if I can do it again. I was so powerful, had a huge range blood brimstone face laser that split into four - cleared a room in about two seconds flat. Don't think I will get that lucky again :(

Also on that same run I somehow managed to get into a massive room and had to fight every single boss it seems, two at a time. That was loving exhausting. I think I have a long way to go before I buy afterbirth.

When it says 'item has appeared in the basement' is that item unlocked forever, or just for that run? Also, is beating moms heart 10 times worth it? thats going to take me a long time.

Yeah, that means it's unlocked forever. Mom's Heart 10 times I think assures you a go at Satan or the other final final boss? It's something you'll eventually unlock, even if it seems very hard right now. I once was like you. Now I get a full clear every other game and I'm not even good at BoI. You can do it.

The Womb levels are my least favorite. I've put hundreds if not over a thousand hours into this game and those rear end in a top hat worms that chase you and the red peekaboos that shoot 3 tears at a time quickly are the worst. The only thing I like is getting Womb XL and only having to do that floor once.

The whole game runs out of steam after Depths. They strip shops, treasure rooms and boss rewards from three out of four floors past Mom. When you reliably can beat the game, three floors without half the special rooms just turns into a slog.

For me, the Womb is usually a scramble to find the boss and get out before the game clock reaches 30 minutes. No treasure rooms or shops means fewer distractions.

I reach Hush more often than I reach the Boss Rush. Whether I can actually handle Hush with my build is a different story.

Tonight has been great for Isaac! I managed to beat both Onan's Streak and The Guardian this evening. I've tried them both several times since I have started playing and tonight I get both done. For Onan's Streak I just had a bunch of damage ups so I was able to kill most things with one charged shot. The Guardian was a war of attrition. I got Infamy and Book of Revelations and was able to keep punching bag alive throughout.

Maybe I will see if I can make it to and beat Hush today. I've never bested him, even with super OP runs.

You will get that lucky again, sometimes the game just throws you a bunch of great items that work well together. Then once you have beat the game a few times with fantastic combinations you start to get further with one or two great items and a bunch of average stuff. Then you can get there without needing any of the fantastic items. My losing streak counter has been in triple digits when I was starting out, but now as long as I'm not getting a bunch of items that I would actively avoid picking up I win more often than not.

The big room with all the bosses was the Boss Rush. You open that by getting to and beating Mom in under 20 minutes. You dont have to go in (you can just continue down the trapdoor instead if you like) and if you do it doesnt lock until you pick up one of the offered items. Beating the boss rush with a character unlocks an item, and as Dias said "X has appeared in the basement" means it has been added to the game permanently and is now in the item pool to possibly show up for all future runs.

Yeah, I've beaten hush with everyone on normal, so I have all the unlocks for him, and as soon as I did that I basically stopped fighting Hush unless I have a combination of items that completely 100% trivialises him. He just takes so long to beat I usually can be bothered.

The thing about his transcendent tears is that every row of them in the same wave follow the exact same paths. For every new wave of them, you just have to find a single space to stand. Make minor adjustments for any other obstacles.
