basic hitler posted:is the pollution universal over there? you can't like, take a day trip to the countryside to take in some less toxic air? Especially in the north you have to remember that the countryside has way less regulations on emissions - even by China standards - so for example Beijing in January ends up being a lot cleaner than your average coal mining town like 七台河.

Those are good things to like and Taiwan has both of them. All the old poo poo is at the National Palace Museum and the nature is everywhere there's not a city, hiking and camping are pretty popular. People are really nice here and at least in Taipei things are well-organized and function well. Nobody's pushing and shoving on the subway.

Unrelated but I just read an article of a guy comparing travel to Taiwan and mainland and everything he lists are pro Taiwan but then gets to why Mainland is better and one of the reasons is how much wealth the rich flaunt their money on the Mainland, and then at the end said they're equal.

Taiwanese is what you speak with your grandparents these days, at least here in Taipei. Mandarin is the everyday language, but like most big cities you can get by with just English. If you go farther afield that will get harder. People won't get annoyed if you're obviously a tourist, but if you can speak a little Mandarin you might get a stream of really rapid, fluent Mandarin back--I have pretty basic Mandarin so far and I get in over my head a lot when people start thinking, "oh okay, this guy speaks Chinese" and they just speak normally to me.

It would be pretty funny if Donald Trump more or less goes back to the pre-nixon state of affairs of pretending the PRC doesnt exist. I know that's not happening but it would be funny.

Taiwan is really awesome, I went to Taiwan before visiting China and thought it would be awesome too. I was wrong though. Also that thing with Trump is hilarious. I wonder if he doesn't know he's not supposed to call her, or just doesn't care. It's awesome either way.
