I was hoping he'd wind up somewhere better but realistically that's probably the best job available to him right now and a huge jump from where he is. Good for him, I hope he can still have super fun offenses that light up everyone except Iowa. Also hope WKU just promotes his brother to keep their good thing rolling.

Dammit, we just got rid of a Chaos offensive coach in the Big Ten.

Coaches cornerbacks. New defensive staff struggled on a dogshit team. Top recruiter at Arizona (not very stiff competition but he stands out I think?).

Yo, peep that shit

During an interview with ESPN Radio Friday morning, former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich admitted to talking to Chip Kelly about Kelly returning to Oregon as the school's next head coach.

"There were all those rumors out there and all that stuff, at that point, you're kind of thinking of every possible scenario," said Helfrich. "Obviously he had been contacted a couple times or something. It was just probably more selfishly than anything of when you start thinking of your assistants and all the support staff, all these people. If he were to come back here, some of those people would be safe."

Kelly coached the Ducks from 2009-12 and had a 46-7 record during his time as head coach. The Ducks went to four straight BCS Bowl Games and played for the 2010 National Championship game.

Helfrich replaced Kelly as head coach in 2013 and retained his entire coaching staff that remained in Eugene. Oregon assistant coaches Steve Greatwood, Gary Campbell, Tom Osborne, Don Pellum, and John Neal all served under Kelly during that time.

The five long-time assistants, along with Brady Hoke, Matt Lubick, and Ron Aikenwill have to wait until a new head coach is hired to find out if they'll be back with the Ducks.

Helfrich doesn't think Kelly will come to Eugene for multiple reasons.

"I don't know if he hated recruiting, dislike, a strong dislike," said Helfrich of Kelly's interest to recruit. "Chip has that challenge in his mind right now to make it right in the NFL....Reading between the lines, I think he wants to make it right, I think he wants to win at that level."

I am still waiting to see who Baylor finds. I don't think they realize how awful that job is.

It's going to be either someone so early in their current stop that the jury is still out (Willie Fritz, for example), or someone that's completely desperate to move on from their current position.

Chad Morris already turned them down, and he's of that too early category. I'd be curious if they consider a Briles tree guy (Babers or Montgomery), or if they're aware that that would be a terrible idea.

There are a bunch of good coaches out there that might jump on the idea, but none of them are as high profile as Baylor wants. Guys like Neal Brown, Willie Fritz (or his SHSU replacement KC Keeler), Sonny Cumbie, Lincoln Riley. Hell, could even give Sterlin Gilbert a shot as he's Briles tree, but far enough from Briles that they'd get away with it.

Personally, I'm rooting for them to be conned by Tuberville. I'm rooting for that so hard, it's not even funny.

He isn't very good. The Vikings basically said Danielle Hunter had to be taught everything once they got him.

Recruit elite talent, coach them how to play = Alabama
Recruit elite talent, kinda throw them out there and let them do whatever = LSU

Coaching kinda matters.

Yea, LSU's d-line play improved a good bit after he left. For a while there we were getting guys like Hunter and Ego Ferguson and Anthony Johnson who were athletic freaks and they had no production to speak of.

We've maintained a pretty good D-line even through these bad years, but he's not been around long enough to really have anything to do with it.

We're #6 in sacks right now, and I think #1 since Strong took over the defense, but really no way to say this guy had anything to do with it. He at least has not ruined a good thing.

It's probably not fair to blame him entirely for that. He was there for some very productive years too, but the last couple were pretty bad. That may have been a more general problem on the defensive side of the ball though, since Chavis seemed a little checked out and defensive play was sloppy at every level. I don't think he's going to blow the doors off though.

Kiffin doesn't run the spread - will not work at a school that recruits entirely out of Texas. The Mack 2010 and Charlie Strong 2014 experience can attest that you can't really take kids that have spent their entire playing lives in a certain style and transpose them to another unless they are all freakish athletes like Bama or LSU.

Find some spread dude and call it a day. Lincoln Riley, come on down...Tech firing Kilff and UH hiring him is also an acceptable situation.

I like what little I've been able to find on him. Seems like his spread would be an easy install, plus Brown got Troy of all places into the top 25.

He or Lincoln would be okay by me, as long as UH keeps in mind either will be in Lubbock no later than 2020.

His offense is better than previous Bama offenses have been and he's had a lot less to work with at QB. His quarterbacks have been a guy who almost got converted to RB, Jacob loving Coker, and a true freshman. I wouldn't hire him as my head coach for a power 5 or top tier G5 job like Houston but he's genuinely a really good assistant

Why the gently caress would anyone want Kliff as their head coach now? He puts up points but overall his Tech teams haven't even been a step up from Tubberville's. When he gets fired he's gonna go back to being an OC which is probably the highest he should go.

I don't want to be a Kliff apologist or anything, but Kliff 2016 is dealing with the problems left him by Kliff 2014. Those first two years plus the final two years of Tuberville left us in really bad shape. As bitchy as the fanbase gets, I think the administration understands that's what they signed up for when they hired him 3-5 years too early. He's just gotta make a bowl next season and he'll be good to go.
