Well What Now posted:I don't disagree but this is probably the worst and stupidest possible way it could've happened. I disagree. I think Tsai saw a brilliant opportunity and took it because she's a woman of action. There was no way cross-strait relations were going to get resolved without some feathers being ruffled and exploiting Trump's belligerent attitude on Twitter has to be the absolute most "we are living in a cyberpunk future" way to get statehood recognition possible and I love it. China is going to be exposed a toothless paper tiger even if Taiwan doesn't end up recognized as a state. The amount of face to be lost is staggering and awesome. But seriously this is the logical next step in the ongoing developments in the region. Obama got the start to his anti-China coalition by arming the Vietnamese. Japan is seriously considering repealing Article IX. Duterte is a loving wildcard. And relations between China and Taiwan have been strained ever since Tsai got elected and wouldn't acknowledge One China.

/\ The minute Duterte officially decides to side with China and abandon the US, is the precise minute that the heads of the Philippine Military decide to put a bullet in him. Realistically, what are China's possible responses? Trump took a phone call, he didn't officially acknowledge the ROC as being a sovereign state, he didn't declare them the rightful rulers of the mainland, and he didn't officially open regular diplomatic relations with their either. Hell, he's not even the president yet. What's China going to do to save this massive loss of face that has hurt their feelings? Military Action is so absurd it's not even really worth mentioning. The US Navy/Air Force are not going to be driven out of any areas they are currently operating in. The Chinese have a few SAMs on their "islands" and they might say there are going to be ongoing live-fire tests in the waters around Taiwan, but they would never risk actually firing on a US military craft. Economic Action is nearly as absurd, as they are balancing on a pretty treacherous precipice, what with their current situation being pretty indicative of a fast-approaching crash. When you look at the trade numbers between the US and China, the Chinese have the most to lose by a few orders of magnitude. If they try something drastic to save face, they will essentially be cutting off their nose to save that very same face. Diplomatic Action is not far behind in the absurdity department since their current "friends" are a handful of African nations, North Korea, and a Russia, all of whom are either completely powerless when it comes to diplomatic influence, currently an international pariah, or both. I'm expecting they are going to release a very angry statement, then stew in their own juices for a while. . . while not really doing anything. Hell, they might have to direct their efforts inwards, as they have been having a bit of trouble with ultra-nationalists getting seriously butthurt and this would likely be another can of gas being thrown on that particular fire they are now regretting they ever started. Here's a really stupid article I just saw that illustrates some of the common mistakes tourist advertising in East Asia makes: http://www.livinginchengdu.com/index.php/Home/Index/article/id/10.html 1) Long history which has all been bulldozed and is gone so irrelevant. 2) Who cares? Nobody's choosing a place to move to/visit in China based on manufacturing, but it does let you obsess about numbers. 3) Again, who cares? Nobody is going to pick Chengdu because you built malls. There's lots of malls. Traffic at the airport is also a thing no one cares about. The airport having lots of routes just means it's crowded, so is actually a negative. 4) lol at anywhere in China being inclusive. Chengdu people are generally chill though, and while they stare like crazy they usually will just interact normally with you and not start shouting THE FOREIGNER IS SPEAKING CHINESE and that is a plus to living here, so this one is half true I suppose. 5) lol again. It's really humid and hot and the sun never shines, come to Chengdu! 6) what. This is at least true that sitting around playing mahjong for 14 hours straight is the only thing people do here. 7) This is accurate, I have no objections. "Chengdu people love to eat hotpot, and you can see hotpot restaurant everywhere." is the biggest understatement I have ever seen. When they say everywhere they literally mean everywhere. There's at least ten within a five minute walk of my apartment. 8) Who cares? Yet more obsessing over numbers that are of no relevance. This is super characteristic of East Asia. You know a Wikipedia article was edited by locals when the entire article is just a list of facts and figures. This is a decent example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changwon quote:The country's longest straight road was constructed in Changwon, with a length of 15.27 kilometres (9.49 mi),[7] with the industrial park to the south and residential complexes constructed to the north. The current plan is an independent foundation in Changwon city, the urban master plan is September 1, 1976 Industrial and promoting the development and efficient management of the city behind for the administrative district of Masan, Changwon, remove it from the earth as the 1977-1986 Area Plan 171.560㎢(42,393ac), was established based on population 300,000. Oh boy! Also got to throw in lies: quote:Changwon is a planned city, taking Canberra, Australia as a model. After Canberra, Brasília in Brazil, and New Delhi in India, it was the fourth planned city in the world, and is Korea's first planned city. Fourth planned city in the world, eh? Washington DC? Manhattan grid? Literally every Roman-founded city? Anyway back to 9) Have to throw in some sexism, right? Also the entire reason for this belief is because Sichuan is cloudy, so girls here are deathly pale. Which also is not true because Sichuanese people are darker skinned in general than northern Chinese. Plenty of people here look just straight up Southeast Asian. 10) The rule that any article mentioning Chengdu must talk about pandas. I don't give a gently caress about this but I guess someone might. So a 10 point article with, at most, two relevant parts. Tourism promoters here are really bad. The place I used to live in Korea would start all of its tourism advertisement with loving pictures of oil refineries and paragraphs upon paragraphs of minutiae about industrial output. To attract tourists. Because ? ? ?

The world according to a CCTV "journalist" based in London This is a pro-loving click, the level of delusion is staggering https://www.hongkongfp.com/2016/12/03/world-according-cctv-journalist-based-london/ The main article is about a twitter beef between said journalist and a woman who had her home demolished in China, it's too nuanced to quote here, but at the end of the article we get this: quote:On UK public opinion against the Hinkley deal: “Very close mind .” (English her own.)
