ExplodingSims posted:Goonmeet in Valentine? "From nowhere," said some. "From everywhere," said others. All the townsfolk knew was that their quiet lives had been interrupted by a sudden and inexplicable influx of people to their town that one cold, windy week in early December. Goons, they called themselves, and they drove vehicles of all makes and models. From pristine supercars to clapped-out beaters, lifted trucks belching smoke to scooters. The schizophrenic collection of automobiles had quickly drained every gaspump dry for 200 miles in every known direction, and some unknown. The drivers were just as ecclectic, with investment bankers, flat-rate mechanics, overweight computer nerds, and hipsters all eagerly eyefucking every car to an almost pornographic level. With all manner of racket coming from the distance of the farm that had become the campsite for the visitors keeping them up at night for a week solid. The poor townsfolk may have believed this to be the end, but this was not the case, for once the "Week of Automotive Insanity" had ended, their pocketbooks had been filled and their junk cars taken away, with narry a scrap of rusted steel to be found. The town would never be the same again.

I need this car. I need this car so I can drive everywhere, 5mph under the speed limit, in a suit, tie and fedora with a look of glazed smugness. Apparently this is what I want to do with my life, now. Can someone tell me what this is, though? Searching "split window coupe" just gets me a bunch of loving corvettes.

Electras are huge, and the grilles don't match. '62 Lesabre seems a better fit, though. When I was a kid I could name the year, make, and model of any American car from about '55-'70 or so on sight. A skill that doesn't get much use anymore, alas.

In the forties they had a reason to look like they did, they were just trying to make something new out of the old tooling while transitioning the factories back to cars from wartime production (and some properly beautiful cars did happen during the period). Wasn't much of an excuse for what happened in the early 60s.

I used to be able to do this too. Yeah, you're right about the other stuff. I've got a '64 Bel Air which is the full size Chevy. I tend to forget about the even bigger models the more luxurious GM brands put out. That does have the distinct look of a gm x frame though, so LeSabre is probably right.

It's generally up to the state police to pull a car over check it if they think it doesn't meet spec. They can have a car towed/impounded if they don't think it's road safe. There isn't much in the way of proactive safety inspection, though. There's emissions testing in high pollution areas, that's about it.

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:What exactly is the legality of driving this thing anyway? Surely you cant just jump in and drive it, so whats required so you dont get pulled over and told to walk? This is loving murica dammit! Seriously, you can drive a loving semi on public streets short distances with no license at all as long as it is "farm equipment." That said, it might be worth checking the gwvr requirements and particularly making sure it doesn't have to go through weigh stations in the states you're going though. Or, you know, register it as farm equipment.

nm posted:This is loving murica dammit! Seriously, you can drive a loving semi on public streets short distances with no license at all as long as it is "farm equipment." It won't be plated heavy enough for that to matter. There wouldn't be any reason to put commercial plates on a truck from the 50's unless you plan on actually carrying commercial loads.
|
# ? Dec 3, 2016 08:24 |

That all also depends entirely on the state of registration. For example, in MA, I would have to: - get commercial insurance - register commercial and pay several hundred due to GVWR - use commercial plates - pass the safety inspection for the year of manufacture All because it has >4 tires OR >2 axles. OR I could register it antique and escape all that. But have to abide by antique vehicle rules. Farm use in this state, I'd have to have a legally declared farm, declare the VINs and types of equipment the farm plates would go on and the locations they would be used at, be issued farm plates, and never drive more than 25 miles from the listed locations to be truly legit. Some states, you can just slap an orange triangle on a harvester and drive it down the interstate.
|
# ? Dec 3, 2016 16:44 |

OTOH, in Texas, if you can find some vaguely agriculture-related excuse for a farm tag you can slap one on and drive all you like anywhere you want. And yeah, like kastein says, if you're driving something other than a truck, like a tractor or a harvester, orange triangle and gently caress the police. e. Old Binsby posted:I'm from Euroland where everything is different, but don't US vehicles need a periodical inspection to determine whether they're still somewhat roadworthy? Aside from the usual emissions standards and seatbelt/safety requirements that usually get waived for older vehicles, you can't take a car on the road here unless it's had a check for general integrity of brakes, drivetrain, suspension, etc etc etc. This entirely depends on the state in the US. Remember that the US is less one unified country and more like fifty little countries that at best will grudgingly admit that they're part of a larger country - and the further towards the Deep South you get, the less likely that even that much will happen. e2. djdanno13 posted:Lol, me and 14 have gave each other some meat a couple times already.
