Everything else has a lot of potential. Nomura vs. Nomura is a very exciting match for hardcore Japanese wrestling nerds and young boy fans. It's a long running gag in the FAQ sections in the information pages of their larger shows. "Will the Steiners appear?" "no" modified to fit the location and the event, this one refering to the NXT show. Knowing DDT this joke has some really obscure origin.

They had a better match in '92 (which is what Red is referring to): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?xz4dag854bd48pv Also, Flair wanted Tenryu brought in for Starrcade (1988 or possibly 1987) because he wanted a really stiff match.

In the time I've been visiting Ditch's archives, I don't think I've seen a Tenryu match I didn't like. I especially liked that tag match he and Jumbo had against Ted DiBiase and Stan Hansen (All Japan, 12-12-86). Really, I don't think the guy has ever lacked in chemistry with any opponent or partner he's ever had.

When you think about great tag wrestlers, your mind goes to midcard 'tag division' Ricky Morton types. In contrast, Tenryu reliably made tag matches feel like legit main events in a way that is almost unthinkable in the US, and very much in a "throw random guys in there with him, it'll work" dynamic at times. Tenryu with three headliners? Epic (Jumbo/Tenryu vs Choshu/Yatsu; Tenryu/Hara vs Jumbo/Yatsu). Tenryu as backup to an outmatched midcarder? Epic (Hansen/Gordy vs Tenryu/Kawada). Tenryu and a lesser partner against a headliner and a midcarder or young lion? Even his smaller show tags could blow the roof off (see a couple of the ones I posted). And it's like, hey here's the 75th best tag match Tenryu was in and it's good enough to be most guys' top 10 if not top 5. Such an insanely huge catalog of great bouts, most of which are still criminally overlooked.

When I first started reading about and watching Puro, Tenryu seemed to be a guy everyone liked a lot, yet he always seemed to get brought up less than people like Misawa, Kawada, and Kobashi. Maybe because his prime wasn't coinciding with the internet developing Puro discussion communities. Maybe because in the 90's people focused less on smaller Japanese companies. Not sure, but it's kinda unfortunate.

He did do a couple of good runs in NJPW (which was outshadowed by 90s AJPW, I assume) and also helped UWFi make a little money before folding.

1. Misawa/Kawada/Kobashi all vastly more athletic, and their best matches had more impressive highlights while also being world-class from a technical standpoint. Highspots were one of the big draws of puro when the alternative was late '90s WCW/WWF, so they caught on quick as the bootlegs became widespread. 2. Tenryu's athletic prime was in the '80s. 3. Tenryu's greatest hits are dispersed across more promotions and more decades, making his career very hard to follow. 4. Tenryu's matches tend not to be especially deep, complex, or technical. So the consensus of Tenryu being below them is really to be expected. It took me years of hunting for puro hidden gems before I came to fully appreciate Tenryu's career. My main goal isn't to have people prefer him to anyone in particular, but rather to have them watch the hidden gems because they're great in a way that's somewhat unique, and give Tenryu the love he deserves. The best analog I can think of is Ishii, whose fire and stiffness make him so consistent and able to pull great performances out of his opponents. Then have Ishii still doing this in like 2033.
