The PKK is predominantly led by Turkish Kurds though. https://twitter.com/Dalatrm/status/803242730692321280 Protests have increased in recent days in Qamishli as they've paired this strategy of working with Assad with an increased attempt to crush opposition to themselves. They raided the HQ of a political party within the KNC and arrested quite a few people there. Tore the place up. People protested and there were a few skirmishes as a result.

I'm pretty sure the SDF see Assad less as an 'ally' and more of a 'lesser of multiple evils, sometimes'. Even if shooting incidents are kept to a minimum, the two factions are going to have something akin to a cold civil war once this is over. And like people have said, over is a relative term.

Syrian conflict intensity actually peaked all the way back in 2012 This data is from the Syrian Observatory for Human rights so its hard to know how comparable it is to these early numbers. The SOfH gave a figure for January 2015 of 2683 compared to about 1500 on this graphic so there numbers are probably higher, and there's a few months of 2015 missing, but here's the series up to last month Since the raw numbers are not comparable I think it's more valuable looking at the trend, which is a slow but steady decline in violence, with a second peak in the beginning of this past year. Note that the decline in conflict severity up to January 2015 was not accompanied by drastic changes in the balance of power. While I think we'll see an immediate decline in deaths after Aleppo is done the trajectory suggests the conflict will go on for many more years. Conflicts generally follow fairly clear trajectories unless there is some dramatic shift in the power balance, like say Turkey and the Gulf cutting all aid to the rebels. For an example of how other similar conflicts play out here's what Algeria's graph looks: And Iraq: I'm not going to plot a trend across two different datasets but it looks like the conventional conflict might be on track to end in the next two or three years, and low grade conflict is liable to continue for many years subsequent. I wish I had the rest of the SofH monthly totals but they don't appear to have been collected anywhere

I know that's sorta groundbreaking to you, but I assure you it is true. A thing happening in Iraq does not mean a thing is happening the same way in Syria. Yes, the guy at the state department (not the white house) got fed up with an RT reporter. You know why? That reporter asks inane, obnoxious questions every loving day without any shred of irony considering they are representing a Russian state-funded media outlet. It also has literally zero to do with the question at hand and is stupid deflection of the issue we're discussing. You're really bad at this. Also, making fun of RT is not going to cost anybody at State their job, dumbass.

Darkman Fanpage posted:Says motar attack, which by the sound of it sounds more likely. You hear a familiar motar "whump" just before the strike and everyone's looking around. Title says minomet, but we don't know what information the uploader based this on. OTOH, hitting a moving vehicle spot on with your first mortar shell sounds statistically impossible, also with usual ranges of engagement you shouldn't be hearing the sound of the mortar shot so clearly. Also a mortar shell is way deadlier for exposed infantry than a shaped charge from RPG-7 or ATGM launcher, and as the videographer survived unharmed it suggests against a shrapnel shell. In other news, Egypt just passed a tightening of punishments for mutilation of female genitals. Mutilators may get 5-7 years of jail, or 15 years if the victim dies or is permanently disabled in the operation. Family members and other participants can get 1-3 years in jail. It's a big change, in 2015 an Egyptian doctor was sentenced to two years and three months in such a case where a girl died, but eventually got out after three months. But I'm assuming that the habit is not going to go away anytime soon.

Saladin Rising posted:"Co-belligerents" is probably a good way to describe the current SDF-Assad relationship. In the short term they share a common enemy (Turkish-backed rebels like Euphrates Shield) and common goals (control of Al Bab), but longer term I agree with Lustful Man Hugs that a "cold civil war" is a likely outcome. A "Cold War" is not possible without the YPG having an outlet through either Turkey or Iraq and an outside sponsor. And the YPG is enemies of both the KRG and Turkey. They are either going to be Assad's bitch or they will be destroyed.
