Then you get to season 2 and they don't even bother with that anymore. Tamers is a weird one because Takato is kept, Ruka was changed to Rika, and then they just gave up with Henry's family. And yeah, the first dub is a treasure- the Tamers dub is legit good and I think it's better than the Japanese version due to the voices. The only regret for the first dub is the music is trash. I don't mind Nozawa as Goku in and of itself, but I think they got lazy as hell when she was also casted as Gohan, Goten, and Bardock. Nozawa as Goku Black is still her best performance.

This isn't just my exact opinion, it's also the best opinion to have. The Funimation dub is also very good. I hear good things about the Spanish dub but haven't heard it myself so I cannot confirm. What would the DBZ crew be called if their names were Americanized? I'm thinking Goku would be Clark because of some smug-rear end assistant editor, Gohan would be Joey, and Krillin would have two initials that don't stand for anything. TJ, probably.

They'd just be vaguely American type names that can fit the same lipflaps as the Japanese ones. The lipflaps are the most important part of translating anime in the 90s, more than having things be similar at all. So Goku is Marcus or whatever, just because it fits the lipflaps and sounds normal to the tiny American children. That and giving anyone non-human some weird name that has nothing to do with their Japanese one to make them seem even weirder for no reason. Piccolo becomes Zorgolog, evil space alien who constantly mentions he is from space. Chiaotzu ends up being rewritten as Tien's magical ventriloquist dummy Mini Man, and they recolor him to look like wood so when he explodes it's not so violent. That kind of stuff.

Roshi would be called "Grampa", that's the only thing I'm sure about. Vegeta would probably be called "Damian" or something. Which character would get a Brooklyn (?) accent? That's something they used to do a lot when they did Americanised dubs (c.f. Naru / Molly in Sailor Moon). I think Slayers had a great dub, but only really once Crispin Freeman starts voicing Zelgadis.

Characters will say "now" or "and" all the time to fill in lip flaps for a lost syllable in translation (like 'Whis' coming from 'U-I-Su") and as someone who is more familiar with the Japanese dubs it bothers you after a while. That's more of a pet peeve than anything though, they've really improved a ton since they began.

One thing that's sort of amusing about the DBZ DVD sets I have (waiting for season four to arrive, which is Garlic Jr. and Trunks) is that they never change the opening or closing titles, so all the way through you've got opening credits with Vegeta and Nappa as the main villains ending on a group shot with Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu and Roshi, then the closing credits are entirely focused on Gohan and have all these shots from Dragon Ball with Launch, Yajirobe, Oolong and Puar all featured prominently.
