I disagree as I think they are easily one of the top five active black metal bands and are on that level. I've listened to the entire album over 10 times already and am not tired of it at all. Eh, different strokes.

That probably has something to do with it, dude is pretty polarizing. Black Metal fans who take the whole kvlt thing 100% seriously and also enjoy Varg probably don't appreciate that. I'm pretty contemptuous of Varg myself, but I could see why that'd bother a fan. I also remember hearing it plays kind of fast and loose with the facts to further narrative, but that may just be bias in the other direction, for all I know. The new Kreator has me excited to hear more. I saw Obituary a few years back (2008?)when I did this logo for the band. Really cool guys and fun to hang with. drat, Frank Watkins was still alive and Ralph Santolla was playing with them. They played a ton of old stuff and most of the Cause of Death album. I'm an avid Midnight fan, but never actually had the opportunity to see them live. Horrendous is NOT to be missed. One of the best young death metal acts out there today. Seems like a pretty decent bill to me.

Speaking of unexpected AOTY material -Violet Cold Magic Night I read this review last night for what is apparently a 1 man "experimental black metal" band from Azerbaijan: http://www.angrymetalguy.com/violet-cold-magic-night-review/ Then listened to it and holy gently caress I am blown away, and there isn't even any vocals - you don't need them. I've never listened to anything "ambient" and actually been engaged - it always seemed like background music to me. When listening to this though I can't even tell there aren't or "should" be vocals. Yet the black metal parts when they arrive are most definitely black metal - I get that mostly just means tremolo picking but still, It's a weird experience for me, but a rewarding one. I can't speak about the rest of this dudes discography but Magic Night is spectacular. Bandcamp: https://violetcold.bandcamp.com/album/magic-night Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOJeYXDpYZo

I'm really enjoying Animals As Leaders new album The Madness of Many. It's similar to the Joy of Motion but in a good way. Listened to Atoma by DT and it was pretty good. Wish I could say the same for Battles from In Flames. It sounds like they're still doing the same poo poo they were doing 12 years ago.
