AOTY for me is between Be'lakor and Insomnium and I'm not really sure which I like more so I'm saying both.

Here's a teaser for the new Nokturnal Mortum album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHElCkFdzHo It sounds maybe a bit too nicely produced and clean but the preview clips aren't very long so it's hard to tell what the whole thing will be like. e:apparently Master's Hammer are playing at Brutal Assault next year, the first show they've played in 25 years. All old material as well. A human heart fucked around with this message at 11:44 on Dec 8, 2016 |

AOTY for me is probably Allegaeon or Vektor, haven't thought much about it The Orbit Culture album I linked the other day is a strong contender which I am surprised about. It's similar to Fallujah's Dreamless in a lot of ways, but it scratches a particular itch that Dreamless just didn't quite do e: spelling kumba fucked around with this message at 15:21 on Dec 8, 2016 |

Can anyone explain to me the appeal of Gatecreeper? This thread and several friends of mine are just singing their praises loudly and I just don't understand why because they sound like a very boring version of Grave to me. Hell, I feel like they also tried to take a page out of Funebrarum's book when it comes to hypnotic leads but it just feels lazy.

Speaking for myself, it's pretty much 90% the guitar tone. I enjoy even the most mediocre swedeath rehash stuff because I just loving love listening to HM2 guitars. Wouldn't put it on my year end list or anything though.

It's just that Black Breath did the Grave guitar tone meets Discharge puck rock piss and vinegar even better. BTW, gently caress all the haters. Mastodon and Baroness are both at the top of their rock game.

Mastodon peaked with Leviathan. Everything past that, I've listened to a few times when it came out. They sounded good, but was more or less not super memorable. I did give Crack the Skye a few more listens than the later albums, however.

Vulture Culture posted:I'm a Shitface McPissypants, but Haken's Affinity is probably still my #1 of 2016 I've been coming back to that one since I've been itching for progressive metal lately. It's so musical as silly as that may sound. There's a real solid songwriting and technical ability balance going on with those guys and the production is so well done that you can easily appreciate everything going on. Should I dive into their older work? Affinity was my first album.

I did give Crack the Skye a few more listens than the later albums, however. Yeah this, I feel like on Leviathan was where their songwriting was at the same time the tightest and most adventurous with a crazy drive and energy. On Blood Mountain they certainly upped the craziness but I felt it started to get a little repetitive and maybe a little too exhausting. Crack The Skye was clearly modeled after some prog-classics and was an interesting step into something different, but I grew tired of it pretty quickly, which is weird since usually pure prog albums take a long time to grow and reveal new things. The last two albums were some boring rear end Foo Fighters-rock radio poo poo; I mean, on a pure modern rock level it was okay, but on a Mastodon level there was no fire, no "holy poo poo"-moments in the songwriting and no real new things. Just some middle of the road rock with maybe two or three decent songs in between them. Of course they can't be full of rage and energy like they were on Leviathan, but it's sad to witness their descent into comfortable mediocrity knowing what they used to be able to do.

i still think Remission is Mastodon's best album. It's not as creative or interesting as Leviathan but it is relentlessly heavy, the drumming is especially furious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=latazoi7XEY TheIllestVillain fucked around with this message at 10:12 on Dec 9, 2016 |

People don't talk enough about Call of the Mastodon. Slickleg, Deep Sea Creature and Battle at Sea are among the best songs they've done, and Brann was just insane on drums back then.

Has anyone seen Opeth live lately? Last time I did was probably 7-8 years ago and I'm tempted to see them and Gojira when they pass through Nashville in May but I'm really not interested in going if they're just going to play the stuff from the last two albums. Here are two wildly different, yet totally cool things people should listen to. Late 80s doom-death from the Netherlands that no doubt influenced all those other cool Dutch bands that came along later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2A41w_1Lf_g Literally Iron Savior except from 1988. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnFd6D8f4c8
