You can also get him to stand down by default if you don't recruit Garrus and haven't been to Therum to pick up Liara yet. Since Kaidan and Ashley both become unavailable during the mission, your only squad member left would be Tali. You're not allowed to have only one person in your squad so Wrex sticks around.

Looking at it slowed down like that, I notice the gun slides out of Ryder's hands to the right when her hands are moving to the left.

Also if you don't recruit Garrus I assume you recruit him just the same in ME2 except you don't know one another?

Yep, Garrus recognizes Shepard from their exploits, but otherwise doesn't know them beyond that short conversation in the Council chambers.

It's not completely awful but it's pretty janky. I think people like it best for the fact that the stats on equipment and powers can be fiddled with quite a lot, and are very modular with the world, so you can create low recoil/low heat shotguns or biotics that can lift tanks. This is a pretty unique thing that, while it has little practical application, is kinda fun, very novel, and not really a feature in the rest of the trilogy.

Oh yeah. I guess I just never gathered that those quests had an affect on the main story.

I forget if giving Tali the Geth data in ME1 affects anything in ME2 besides that extra line or two of dialogue in the beginning. Going to those five planets was the first side mission I ever took in ME1 after leaving the Citadel and it was a good thing that I was pretty into the story by that point since those missions were probably a gamekiller for many.

I mean the combat in ME1 wasn't amazing but it was perfectly serviceable. Keep in mind that this was nine years ago we are talking about. And I know that Mass Effect the series has basically become "Not RPGs" like Bethesda is doing, but back in 2007 Mass Effect really was supposed to have an RPG core in the traditional style. It wasn't supposed to just be "a shooter game but your character levels up".

The combat was fine. The only games in 2007 that may have clearly had "better" combat were straight up action games that didn't have to satisfy any real RPG mechanics, like Halo 3 or Assassin's Creed (1). This was the year of Overlord, Bioshock, and The Witcher. It was a year when Oblivion was still in full swing and released Shivering Isles.

I think compared to those title it's hard to say that ME1 had terrible combat. Maybe it wasn't the best, but it was good.

Yea it was definitely janky, even at the time, but it was also a huge step forward from the mostly turn-based or pseudo real-time combat systems of KOTOR, NWN, etc. No one had really merged the big 40+ hour RPG with that kind of gameplay.

The combat in ME1 is okay I guess. I mean it's been serviceable enough for me to have gotten through the whole thing 4-5 times but on most of those runs I just cheated my way to 9999999 credits and SuperArmor so that I didn't have to break up the flow of the game grinding every worthless mod down into omnigel every 10 minutes.

No it's not because I don't think it's needs defending. I think it is good. But I enjoy old school RPG mechanics. If you do not enjoy that stuff then you probably would not like the combat in ME1.

Geostomp posted:

You could apply this to a million games. You could apply it to Destiny.

But in any case I agree that the itemization kinda sucks and that the inventory definitely sucks. But those are separate issues from combat mechanics.

Well there is no official organization whose job it is to codify what is a genre and what isn't so I'm not sure what to say about that. Wikipedia thinks RPG is a genre for what it's worth.

But even if it's not a Literal-True-Genre you still know exactly what I mean when I say the words " traditional RPG" and are just choosing to be pedantic about it.
