I took a 3-star, 9/16 fed Mage with no soul links to 60+ in the Lost Temple. Using the shrines to kill enemies makes it really easy to ration your spells, as well as using melee attacks strategically and using your otherwise useless healing spells to top up. The boss is an utter joke because you just use your high level spells to blast the poo poo out of him with almost no repercussions. It was really easy to abuse the shrines to summon up a full set of Apprentice gear and then keep upgrading them to the 5 star set (Demon?) through the Summon Workshop. With the full Demon set You get a free Rank 3-5 scroll every time you go up (down??) a floor. Once I'd maxed out all my titles and the Demon set I just used shrines to summon Scroll shops to keep myself flush of spells. I capped out at some point after L60 because the elementals were talking too many spells to kill and I ran out of gas. I could probably get farther if I had any other Canas' Enlightenment slimes to link it with. It might take a bit of luck to make sure you get the right spells, because at one point I nearly ran out of damage dealing scrolls that the elementals that were spawning weren't immune to. You'll end up with way more Lightning Bolt than Fireball since you get a free one every floor so keep that in mind.

Yeah despite my earlier claim that I had to delete Gumballs & Dungeons because it was cutting into "actual" gaming time I redownloaded it anyway because it's really great. I'm glad that once you max out a gumball they're removed from the Golden Pots pool. Almost every single F2P game with a collection mechanic relies on an ever slowing drip of progression to nudge you toward spending money and giving you duplicates for the same reason. That this one doesn't seem to do either of those things but scratches the same itch is great. For anyone who only played a little bit and didn't see the big deal, give it like an hour tops to open up and show you the metagame and the different themed mechanics each maze has. One maze has undead enemies with bones you loot to build and upgrade armor at each floor's altar. One has elemental enemies who drop crystals that you plug into an altar in different combinations to cast some spell or buff your attack and a diary that keeps track of what combinations you haven't tried yet. There are 22 mazes and if they keep up this nice bit of variety in enemies and mechanics per maze I'll be happy.

mrkillboy posted:Solitairica is a mash up of solitaire and RPG and roguelike things that's out now on Android after an initial iOS release a few months back. Been giving this a try here on a slow work day, aside from a stream I just watched, and drat, it's really good. Think of its pricing model as pay-for-what-you-want rather than F2P with microtransactions or an outright paid game. I just finished my first run, 13 (out of 18) battles in, where I was against a Levitating Jam Cube Iron Bureaucrat. It turns out Levitating is brutal (copy a card's number onto two cards on both sides of that card) by itself, more so when paired with the Jam Cube's Reshuffle (reshuffles the cards into one fewer column, down to three). It looks, sounds and plays great, though I am on a Pixel so I don't know how it runs on older devices, and the writing is charming. (The enemies in the Armies of Stuck attack when you can't make any matches.) Gameplay is just about perfect for a mobile game. Take just the basic premise of Solitaire, matching cards by their rank up or down, and add in player and enemy abilities in place sorting a deck of shuffled cards. I don't know how it handles being closed in the middle of a run, but it sat suspended on a loading screen for over two hours while I was watching a Twitch stream and came back as if nothing happened, so I can't imagine being closed would forfeit your run. (Edit: Just tried on a new run, and the game immediately loaded right back into the fight I was on when I reopened it.) Ads are done well, in that after every battle you get a set amount of Bounty coins, increasing as you go, that can be doubled by watching an ad. Coins collected through cards or pairing streaks are unaffected. Coins are spent on new spells and items. The only issue I had with the game, and I've already come around on it while writing this post, is unlocking new decks. After you lose a run you get some Wildstone currency, which can then be used to upgrade or buy new decks. I got enough after my first run to unlock a new deck so I figured I'd pick up one that interested me rather than upgrade the free deck. It turns out that each of the five locked decks needs $0.99 USD in addition to the Wildstone to unlock. There is an option for $3.99 to make all decks available for unlocking, remove ads and automatically double the Bounty coin reward, which I'm probably going to do. If you want to play free, the Warrior (free) deck doesn't seem to be weaker than the other decks on a quick look at what the game says about the locked decks and can be upgraded like the others so you're not missing out on power, just variety. If there's a deck or two that interests you, you can pick them up for a buck each and some Wildstone, or if you want the full game you can pick it up at a fair price (pretty drat cheap) for a mobile game. I tried another mage run for the daily on the Lost Temple. The mage just made my jaw drop as I 2 shotted the first end boss... 3 shotted the 2nd... 5 on the 3rd and never made it to the 4th... I also got my power up to 108 thanks to an item which gave me a +18 power at the cost of -10 hp... per spell cast. Worth it. Especially with "Cure" giving me 108 HP back for a single spell. Mana became the ultimate issue in the end and the whole run took me 90 minutes. (FYI on the poop break thing, you can close the game and it'll reopen saying "Hey you got a dungeon in progress, wanna continue or pause?" -- No idea what pause does since Engrish has screwed me over in some choices like rescuing the gumball from the floating island which I still feel guilty about. )

Being able to pause dungeons is cool, I didn't know that was possible so I just went through dungeons in one go. I still can't quite bring myself to do more than one or two dungeons at a time though.

I just had a phenomenal (Gumball) run in the second maze, died to the floor 90 boss who has so much health it displays as ???? until you get it below 10,000. One of the dragonball wishes gives you a new title tree for dragon skills, and they are off the wall powerful. Healing 12 hp on kill, instakill anything below 40% hp (20% on bosses), and attacks cause enemies to bleed, upgraded to deal 175% of your base damage per round for 5 rounds, and you deal 300% damage to bleeding enemies. (The tree only has one title per level until the last one. The branch I didn't pick had a base of 100% damage to all high-level spells). Finally got Zorro Gumball and all the DP quests for that maze. I think I used 3 portal of earth spells to get an extra 60 floors of grinding. My preferred strategy of using the Legendary Hunter title tends to taper off past floor 50. I had over 200 attack, but floor 90 basic enemies had 450-1k hp and 100-250 attack, so I'd have to clear the entire screen just to auto-kill one guy. I'm not sure if the other adventurer class titles would be any better for super deep runs, or if Legendary Hunter is still the best to get that deep without dying. I'm finally starting to 5-star some of my guys. It looks like Adventure class gumballs get +3 EP per kill, Melee gets +1 defense, and Mages get some Hp or Mp each floor as part of becoming 5 stars. Once they are 5-star, their final weapon and certificate give you airship stats. Also those weapons take like, 400 eternal gold or holy crystal. Each unit of those materials takes a base of 3000 fragments from the artisans. With max artisans (100) and a 24 second timer, that's 5 per hour. Over 3 days per weapon upgrade from artisans alone.

Really enjoying Gumballs. Just a question - what's a good way to get stronger if a floor is beating you too easily, short of stuffing food into your gumballs' mouths? Like, is it better to try to grind for the tablet pieces, get more gumballs for their abilities (that I think apply to everyone?) or just find a more optimal setup? I can't quite tell due to the translation, but gumballs have abilities that apply to every other gumball, right, not just ones that are brought along to a dungeon? Also there's a weird issue it has where on certain wifi networks it can't connect to the server, but since I have a great data plan that's not really an issue. Just weird. Edit: Oh and what's a good thing to spend gems on? More gumballs, I assume?

If you complete tablet pieces and upgrade the star rank of the gumball their global skill is upgraded (the one you see right on the character screen). If you feed the gumball their exclusive skill is upgraded (the one you see when you tap the icon on the bottom right). Both are good ways to bring some additional power, but upgrading the exclusive skills of the gumballs you bring along in the Soul Link page is the most immediate power boost. Which dungeon are you having trouble with? I think other people have mentioned that if you have a bunch of gems maxing out the exploration survival kit so they can go out for a full 8 hours can get you some good returns. Something I didn't realize was that the rewards scale with the amount of time they spend outside, so it's not just a way to let the game idle longer. I've been pretty stingy with my gems, but if you revive 3 times over 3 separate runs you can get a new gumball for just 15 gems.

From what I can tell, there's largely the same item/spell pool that you draw from, except for upgrades to the class's unique spells (Monk's stun and armor spell for example, though there isn't an upgrade for the wildcard spell since it's so strong to begin with.). The deck upgrades seem to share the Ace upgrade (three energy of that card's type when drawn from your deck), past that I'm not sure since I haven't unlocked the Queen upgrade on Warrior, though I think they may be different based on the flavor of the Monk ones (stun on Queen and a special bell graphic that matches the deck back on the King).

Tips for addictive as hell Solitairica. I have unlocked the full game. But buy the additional decks before going to upgrade your own deck. I guess they are $0.99 by themselves? I got the farthest I've ever gotten using the monk deck. So useful to have a stun the enemy for one turn, and another spell they have it to make your own card wild. As you usually draw just defense or agility cards as a monk, a few turns of being able to do absolutely nothing turns into 'okay now I will win'. Sad thing is that further on enemies start to hit you HARD. I lost by taking 9 damage in a turn. 6 from an enemy attack, 3 from 3 enraged cards.

If you buy the unlock game option you don't have to pay for the individual decks. You still have to unlock then with Wildstone, but the real money cost should be taken care of by the full purchase. Enraged cards are my number one priority whenever I'm up against them. Saving attack energy for them, stunning the enemy to delay their attacks, burning something like the Monk's wildcard ability to take even one out if no other option pops up after a couple turns, etc. That said, sometimes you just get screwed by random chance and there's nothing you can do. I found the items that upgrade every card in your deck of the same numeral to heal you surprisingly useful, even the 2s version, since it's healing you don't have to spend any energy on. Anther tip I'd add is on using the storm that changes cards toes to give three cards. It's very useful early on, but I wouldn't use it past the halfway point or after picking up an hourglass. Gaining energy during the fight is way more important later on than having coins to spend in the shop afterwards.
