It is strange how many Freepers are into Trek. I mean, it's well known Freepers will like something cool and then decide it's conservative so they can watch it without shame. But Trek itself seems an odd choice. Why not the boring white-bread of Lost in Space? Or the black-and-white morality of Star Wars? There's an undercurrent of technological utopianism to the super right wing that I presume has some sort of historical connection, because they sure as hell hate science nowadays!

I'm currently working my way through DS:9 (7 seasons of TWENTY SIX x ONE HOUR EPISODES per season - which is incredible compared to more modern shows), Gul Dukat is FReeps mascot. I was going to post the meme image of Gul Dukat wearing the Trump hat that says, "Make Cardassia Great Again" or something to that effect. I watched an episode in S6 last week that's a time-gently caress episode where all the characters are in the late 40s. Sisko is black, obv, and works at a Sci-Fi book company. The whole episode is a lens on how Blacks were treated in the Jim Crow era. It's pretty great. Incidentally the guys who play Quark and Gul Dukat are fantastic actors and should be in more stuff.

TOS had quite a lot of things that look pretty conservative and stuff that's basically a Freeper's wet dream, such as the episode where they're on a planet that's somehow colonial era America and Kirk recites the "sacred speech" which is the Preamble to the US Constitution.

Uhura's role in the show was a huge step forward for black women, but she rarely went on away missions and didn't have a lot of say in what Kirk did, so I can see them viewing it as a woman's "proper" place as opposed to Discovery where she's the main character. And for as multicultural as it was, there's still the old joke about Bush talking to the Saudi guy or whatever about how there's no Muslims in Star Trek saying "It takes place in the future." Granted, that changed in DS9 with Bashir at least, but I think it was still true for TNG.
