Enourmo posted:They actually do spell it al-u-min-i-um, though. Whoever wrote that paper thought it fit better with names like lithium, sodium, titanium, etc. Nevermind that platinum and lanthanum exist, two outliers from the pattern is fine but three is just unacceptable. It is convention* that the names of metals would end in -ium. Titanium, beryllium, sodium, calcium, iridium, magnesium, etc. So by that logic aluminium is more correct. Other conventions*: Halogens end in -ine (chlorine, iodine, astatine). Noble gases end in -on (argon, krypton, neon). I say * because there were tons of exceptions to the rule from the beginning. Any element that already had a name generally kept it (iron, zinc, sulfur). Sometimes the scientists just didn't care and used -um instead of -ium because it sounded better (platinum, tantalum). Sometimes they were wrong about what an element was (helium was first discovered in the sun's spectrum, and was believed to be the metal that the sun was made out of, hence -ium ending). Sometimes they just didn't give a poo poo, for instance when naming boron, which is not a noble gas and is just called that based on an old Persian word, or tungsten, which is just Swedish for "heavy stone." tl;dr: there is no pattern, it's all meaningless

joat mon posted:No need to gild the lily, let's hear it. OK, so there's a generic Canadian rural accent (think "talks like the trailer park boys") and the Newfoundland accent is like that but with a few unique expressions thrown in, and a bit more twang - maybe a dash of Texas or something. I like it, its kinda Irish and its kinda Canadian. Add to that (and this is based on where you grew up) you might have additional stuff, usually like a regional UK accent. I used to work in a bakery in Newfoundland and one of my coworkers used to use "he" and "she" like she lifted it from "Where Be that Blackbird Be." Anyway, I told this story a few times to the people, and they all, regardless of accent, found this story hilarious: So it's near Christmas and I'm stocking the floor and a co-worker, Tanya calls me over to help a little old lady. Tonya has a pretty thick accent; kind of a mumbly-Manchester type thing, and I think most of you might have a little trouble understanding her until you got acquainted with it. I didn't realize it at the time, but Tonya had been abjectly defeated by this little old lady. The little old lady turns to me and asks "D'ye 'ave any 'ok o's?" "I'm sorry?" " 'ok o's, d'ye 'have any 'ok o's?" I'm stumped. "What is that?" " 'ok o's! Ye sell 'em here all the time! Only I want them that aren't filled yet, the h'mty ones." My brain is sorta hardlocked by this. The bakery has lots and lots of things with filling, so saying "like those, but empty" isn't much help. In desperation I ask her to find me an example of what she is talking about (this usually causes the customer to go away.) To my surprise she comes back quickly, with some tarts. I'm glad we're getting somewhere, but I'm still sorta baffled. She repeats what she just said, and two and two finally go together: she's looking for frozen pastry shells, specifically tart shells. I'm pretty sure the market stocks those, but in frozen, not in the bakery. Before I send her off there, I ask her what she's calling the tarts. With only a slight bit of exacerbation, she says " 'ok o's, Y'know! R-O-C-K H-O-L-E-S!" Yeah, " 'ok o's" is "rock holes" - evidently a name for tarts I've never heard before, sorta like cockney rhyming slang, but with half the letters dropped, just for fun?

“Rockhole” + “tart” or “pastry” or “bakery” doesn’t turn up anything relevant on Google, so I’m at a loss. Possibly an old, regional brand name?

Also with a mid-mounted engine it had a serious balance problem, to the point where the recovery technique from a spin at less than 10,000 feet was "bail out".
