The question isn't whether Freepers can handwaive TOS into a conservative show. They could handwaive Steinbeck into a conservative if they wanted to read him; reality is no object. The question is, how did these selfish and hateful fucks latch onto this show of all shows in the first place? I think it points to the fact that in order to become such a committed, delusional rear end in a top hat, you need to start as a dreamer. Some Freepers started as Democrats, others were indoctrinated Republicans from birth, but I'll bet they were all idealistic kids. TOS appealed to idealism and ambition more directly than most of the other shows I can think of at the time. Nowadays for various reasons Freep's ambitions are genocidal, their ideals are white theocracy, and their dreams are largely from the false promises of their childhood. But that childhood includes loving Trek, so they lump it into all the other vapor they cling to from their idealized past. And if it takes a bit of delusion to make this thing fit into who they are now, they're used to making that play.

Well, that's likely because as a kid the problems of the nation and world aren't yours. You simply do your kid stuff. Once you hit a certain age and start working to earn a buck, suddenly all the problems and factors that drive the world come down on you. Suddenly that little tax increase you wouldn't have even known about as a child suddenly effects whether you have food to last till the next check or not while finding a way to balance all your bills

Youre way overcomplicating this. Star Trek is about heroic humans solving dumb alien's problems and sometimes punching them or blowing them up. The Freepers are the humans, everyone else is the aliens. American exceptionalism, much like the Federation, gets called on to save the rest of the world from their own backwards cultures. Sure the Enterprise has a few aliens and women or whatever on board, because theyre the good ones and smart successful people recognize talent everywhere. But its always humans (Americans) who save the day. The only leap it takes is to equate the weird aliens with foreigners and every series becomes the triumph of American ideals.

For a freeper, life was better when they were a kid, when a woman's place was in the kitchen, a black's place was in the back of the bus, a Muslim's place was over in that scary foreign area we don't talk about, and a gay's place was so deep in the closet no light can be seen. They also watched Star Trek as a kid. By accepted freeper math, occurred as a kid = good. Hence why they like Star Trek. The Star Trek that's occurring these days = bad.
