Wish I had a streetable Miata for just that reason. With snow tires, they're actually surprisingly good winter cars.

I went to pick up a couple of old speakers today, the guy I got them from had a workshop for his cars as part of his business unit. The cars in question were a clubman rallying Mk1 Escort with a 1700 X-Flow on twin Webers, and a drag racing Mk2 Escort RS2000. ~540ci big-block ford, and apparently the fastest one in the world when he was actively competing, running quarters in the eights @170ish trap speed. I'm afraid I didn't take any photos, because it would have been a bit rude, but it was a combination of , , and .

^^^^ That essay is way too real when you combine it with part of an interview he did in the summer where he explains his weird rear end sense of humor as an extension of how uncomfortable he felt in normal social situations while growing up.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-SAGXD9IkM&t=330s The tone that The Roman takes in the comments makes it sound like the video is supposed to be a satirical bit exaggerating the awkward and isolating problems of working from home, but Mr. Regular did do that college visit video for no discernable reason... If it's satire, well, it's really effective given how it showed up appropos of nothing and sounds like his paniced Falcon videos when it would overheat and die everytime they tried to get the car moving. If it's earnest, I hope he's seeking help Seat Safety Switch posted:It's crazy how cool the hub of the rotor remains even as the outside is getting eaten up. It's a testament to the design of the lovely, econobox brake rotors and wheel bearings that even with the disc at +2,000F, the hub portion stayed under 160F and was almost entirely intact after the explosion. Hell, the transmission gave out before the second brake did, which is the most surprising part of the thermal camera section to me Also, the phrase, "I made accidentally burnout," before jamming a railroad spike through the holes in his steely is worth hearing in that crazy thick accent

Same guy's done the driveline from a late 80s Hilux/Pickup/4Runner. 22RE + trans + dual tcase + at least one axle. I always thought they were kinda cool. I think that v8 has a few stuck lifters or something though, at least two of the rocker arms seem to not be moving.

Shai-Hulud posted:I just got brand new winter tires on my MX-5. I need to get a decent hat and scarf now...Oh and snow would help When I bought my 1997 MX-5 it came with a set of studded winter tires. They were old (~10 years) and rubber felt like a hockey puck, but they were not visibly worn at all (rubber or studs). So, it seems the car was barely driven in winter and I'm keeping it like that, it spends approximately October - April in a barn. I had it out pretty early last spring and there was a late reoccurrence of winter, and while slipping around in the snow/slush is good fun (especially since I had it on summer tires), I would just be way too likely to crash it. Also didn't enjoy the ice forming on the inside of the soft top or the constant fogging up everywhere, and after a couple winters of driving in the salty slush here it would probably just rust away. Boring, I know, but I'll get that much more enjoyment out of it come next spring. That said, kudos to everyone crazy/cool enough to drive their convertible roadster in proper winter, especially with the top down. I saw an NB the other day out driving here (with a hard top) and did get a little bit jealous.

There's a guy who works in the same set of buildings as I do, and he dailies his GTR year round. When I chatted with him he said he basically roasts a set of summers yearly and they typically wear out just as he needs to put snows on. He said "it's all wheel drive, works great with good tires". He didn't say anything about the cost, but his boss has a 911 GT3RS, so I imagine their business is doing well enough tires aren't a big concern

You can downsize to 18" wheels on GTRs which gets you better and cheaper snow tire options.

In my area of Scotland, winter driving is easy because the council put down a fuckload of salt constantly. No car lasts more than 10/12 years here for obvious reasons.
