logikv9 posted:Also, define it for me so 'protection of property' = 'freedom from theft' but 'paying tax' = 'requirement to give' the problem is a) who gets to define freedom we could just as well say that food stamps = freedom from starvation, they both require taxes in order to actually work b) there's no rigorous philosophical difference between the two, nor a reason giving why we should care in terms of agency, between the requirement to do something and the requirement to not do something, they're both limiting in exactly the same way (they limit your total freedom of action), by drawing that line you're essentially making a distinction without a difference

Anime Schoolgirl posted:similarly to primary salt, the discussion goes nowhere due to the insistence of one or more parties involved in the discussion that one or more factors is either the sole determining factor of the election/are irrelevant or were actually beneficial to the outcome of the election How toxic can this conversation get? You already said that Russiachat consumed three pages, but was it somebody coming in trolling everybody or was it a non-stop flamewar that was only ended with probations? Productivity is important (and I would argue that it is still a marginally relevant topic as well, with that debate being the cornerstone of the DNC chair election / Russiachat) and it is important that the topic discussed as a chance to become something more than just a point of pure disagreement. That being said, while some topics related to the general election do seem very unproductive and a little bit stupid, I think to make it work you have to carve out very specific rules on whether or not some topics are allowed and some topics are not. For example, is bringing up Russiachat in the wider spectrum of "things that went wrong" probatable? Is it okay paired with other things? What if we are talking about the CIA/FBI report? It's not as clear-cut. On top of this, one of the more compelling reasons behind the "no primary salt" rule was the toxicity and flamewars. We completely "outlawed" a specific topic, and even then it was narrowly defined in how you must approach said topic. That's not something that forums should generally do unless you're Freep or /r/the_donald. What made it possible was the flamewars. Those things consumed two Hillary threads, 1 Bernie thread, and 3-4 Democratic Primary threads. What really pushed this rule forward (and I think I indicate a bit on this in the Rules Post) was that it wasn't just a very productive topic, but a very flammable one. It's a thing that can pop up apparently in any thread on the forums, and D&D is has two threads full of this that don't seem like very good things to read. C-SPAM's looser rules means that were are generally less capable of handling the topic, and to be fair this should be a cool and good place to post. Even then, we haven't outlawed primary chat, but primary salt. It's an ultra-thin line but the difference is that anybody can talk about it but have to walk a very careful line between "discussion" and "full blown flamewars" which is actually much harder than you think! Depending on who is reading that post, that line might not even exist After all this, we are willing to stomp out causes of trouble, whether it be posters or in extreme extreme XULTRAX XEXTREMEX cases, topics. Unless the general election salt becomes more widespread, more specific, and really, really awful, I think it's something we have to deal with for now.

Seriously? The current sanctions were a direct result of their moves in Crimea and Ukraine; it's pretty ballsy for any country to just annex whole areas of sovereign states and not expect any pushback from the West. Plus, even before that, Russia was using it's enormous oil and gas reserves to outright blackmail Western Europe into submission. Add in the fact that Putin has jailed or assassinated political rivals and is basically a dictator, with the acquiescence of the Russian people, you get a scenario where Russia is really not anybody's friend or ally; everything for Russia is a partnership of convenience. The only thing worse than a Russia under Putin will be a Russia under the hard right wing ideologue that takes over after him.
