Getsuya posted:Glad you're enjoying it! As a PSP fanboy this was one of my favorite series. I really like the new classes for VFD, and how quickly they start throwing you against the dragons. The first 2 games had some poor pacing at the start, but VFD gets you into the thick of things pretty quickly. It's definitely a solid title and the best in the series. Another sweet surprise was the sense of humour the game has! For example there's some random guy around when you start to fight the first dragons who goes: "Ha, I played this videogame too, now I can use my skills in reality! " But then it turns out he is paralyzed by fear and can do jack poo poo! Or the way you get your unit name: When your corporation overlords bring the question up it sounds like you can soon enter your group's name like the guild name in EO, but then they give you just two dumb options. And instead of selecting them, you can complain about them! And your new lords and masters then go passive-aggressively "Welp OK if you think option A is dumb your group is now named option B". With some of the stuff NPCs are saying, I'm honestly not sure if I'm not playing a subtle parody on Etrian Odyssey-style games.

They did gameplay a long while ago, with the gimmick being you can choose between old school top down and the 3d movement.

Trails of Zero has one of the easiest casinos in RPGdom. The poker AI is horrible. As long as you can put together 1 pair most of the time, raise three times and jump off when the prize hits 500 you can clean them out really quick. It's ridiculous. Also ridiculous is the crafts that completely show up artes, at least during the first half. Lloyd gets an AoE strength boost that makes the strength buff spells instantly obsolete, gun-girl gets an AoE heal that is better than any healing spell at the moment, and Randy gets a 100% blind that hits almost the whole battlefield and does damage. Tita had a weaker version in TitS but they nerfed it for 2, only to bring back an even more broken version for Zero. Teo also gets a good debuff but I always save up for her Scraft because it has some ridiculous damage output that makes bosses a joke.

Ridiculous casinos make any RPG better, especially if you can turn your winnings into crazily overpowered characters. Unfortunately, more and more it seems like the prizes offered aren't that amazing. I really enjoyed the monster arena betting in FFXV, and there were some cool items to be had, but the bet caps made me sad since it would have taken forever to get the best stuff.

Has anyone played Summon Night 5? I just learned of its existence after feeling nostalgic for the GBA games that got localised (Swordcraft Story 1 and 2.) After looking up the series history, turns out someone was nuts enough to try and actually localise another game since I last checked. It looks like a pretty alright game so seems weird that it passed so completely under my radar since I do like to keep a pretty close eye on the JRPG scene, but I guess it being a PSP exclusive release in 2015 might have something to do with it.

It's a pretty generic SRPG crossed with a harem VN and nothing like the Swordcraft Story games (they were spin offs from the main series originally).

All this talk about Trails really makes me question the wisdom of playing multiple story-heavy games in a continuous series, each of which is apparently around 60-100 hours long, when the final installment of said series is not and may never be localized. Especially when every single one ends on some variety of "To Be Continued."

Most of the the Trails entries wrap up their own individual stories just fine, Sky SC in particular has a pretty satisfying conclusion. Also dunno what you mean by the final installment, since I can't imagine Cold Steel 3 isn't getting a localization and there's no real reason to think it's going to be the final one anyway.

They translate 'sempai' as 'senior'. Even if you don't know or care about Japanese you know that 'How's it going senior!' when talking to an old high school buddy Doesn't sound right in English. I have literally never seen any other translation that couldn't find a better way to handle that word than slapping the dictionary translation on it and calling it a day. It's one of the most painfully straight and clunky translations I've ever seen. I'd honestly prefer the old Working Designs 'lol pop culture references!' stuff to this.

Well with everyone talking about Cold Steel, I'm sort of interested in playing it now. Is it less, uh, aggressively anime than Trails in the Sky? I got to the part where you meet Oliver and sneak onto a pirate airship, and having three characters in your party who serve as walking anime tropes was just a little too much. I also remember getting to a dungeon where you had to go all the way inside only to find a locked door, walk all the way back out of the dungeon to find a cutscene where you get a key, and then walk all the way back to the lock and that was enough to push me over the edge of quitting.

Trails of Cold Steel is The Most Anime. If Olivier was too much, you would absolutely loathe it. Getting around is easier in general, at least.

Sky second chapter ends conclusively, and 3rd is out in spring, Cold Steel 2 has a lot left hanging but 3 isnt out in japan yet but based on the success of 1 and 2 the west getting 3 is a no brainer.
