It'd be cool if we got a star wars story without the empire. Like the empire has been defeated so many times now. Even their spinoff empire in Force Awakens was defeated

it is time to move on from them

Well they were dead on with their description of alot of this movie as essentially Star Wars porn. Didn't hear alot of people when I saw it in the theater but yeah it totally makes sense. And just thinking it was cool to have an action sequence with a bunch of Star Wars stuff happening was kind of what won me over on it as well, makes me realize that I am somewhat guilty of it (though I more or less hated the fanservice stuff before and after this, especially the Leia reveal). I mean is anyone really going to be watching this movie again for anything other than the last 30 minutes or so? I remember watching it and being kind of torn between liking and hating it, then the last 30 minutes happen and I kind of forgot this.

yeah i agree with that, but as the democraphic that was (fat bearded guy though younger then 30) i liked horror hallway vader and basicaly the last hour. i wanted a loving bleak war movie and anyone who didnt think it was going to end up like that is loving moron.

like i get their arguments, but i feel like they would have hated it no matter what. i honestly think they dont know what they want in a star wars movie.
i do agree with their points about to much fanserves(though i thought the fan servece was better done then force awakens) and the main characters were poo poo.

I don't consider myself a Star Wars fan at all but I enjoyed TFA way way more than this one pretty much because of the characters in TFA. I think that, like they said , Edwards can stage an action scene but he can't direct actors for poo poo. Forrest Whitaker in particular was a totally undirected actor in this, it's like he was taking the piss to see how hammy he could act. Comparing it to his performance in Arrival from last month is like night and day.

I'm hoping for a gritty war/heist commando mission poo poo with characters that aren't horrible but they don't need to be interesting, and a serviceable plot that while not incredibly creative doesn't have gaping infuriating plot holes or terribly contradict established "lore". All acting as a framework for cool star wars poo poo going on with spaceships and dog-shaped tanks and such. I assume that's what I'm getting?

The characters are actually horrible and the worst part of the movie, particularly the main leads. You just don't give a poo poo about them at all. Like the idea for this film is fine but the main characters are woefully underwritten. There's also far too many.

TIE Fighter was the best Star Wars game and people always pick the dark side when they have a choice, so odds are we'll get movies from the Empire point of view once they run out of "Young _____" stories to make.

I think they want a good movie with good characters. A movie that would be good if it didn't have to rely on Star Wars fan service.

A movie based on TIE fighter would be so good and it would actually probably be super popular for that reason. Follow the career of an Imperial pilot who joined up because the empire stopped a horrible civil war on his planet. He does basic navy stuff, fights actual bad guy criminals and smugglers and corrupt imperial traitors. Hell follow the plot of the game, it's probably better written than what ever disney would come up with.

There's something really sexy about Scrooge McDuck. I love Uncle Scrooge.
Why would Disney be worried about box office. Batman v 9/11 Hijacker Jesus and Superfluous Squad did great at the box office despite being incoherent garbage.

Did Gareth Edwards' dad die when he was young? Why does he keep killing off the best actor/character in his movies at the end of the first act?

It's a war movie in the vein of 60s-70s ensemble task squad war movies. Guns of Navarone, Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, etc. It's enjoyable on that level since the action is well shot but I feel like each gimmick character could have done with one more good action scene before their heroic sacrifice. The problem is you can't do that because we're burning screen time on two lifeless, unlikeable leads with no character arcs. One of which is incapable of acting.
