But if you're unique or have qualities I haven't observed in a woman before, you literally aren't like other girls. The statement is fine, you weirdos.

"You're not like the other girls" is something my female friends in STEM fields got told a lot by their awkward coworkers/classmates who were trying to ask them out, so i can kinda see where the stigma would come from.

Yeah, it's basically got a "You're one of the good ones" hidden in plain sight there. Most women are vapid cunts, but not you, you're not like other girls.

I never thought about "you're not like other girls" like that. I mean, if a girl told me I'm not like other guys, I would assume she meant that I'm good and most other guys are bad.

That's because you're obviously a cis-het male shitlord and I don't even have the time it would take to educate you on your over-privileged, compliment-taking rear end... loser. *jetpacks awaaaay lol that's a funny bit right?*

I'm just imagining the least romantic relationship ever. What do people in ultra-progressive relationships actually say if they cant handle being complimented?

Fun Shoe
We typically submit compliments to a peer review panel of at least 5 differently gendered, preferibly therian judges, and only submit it if they all deem it to be suitably inoffensive to everyone.

Oh come on, at best that's a really backhanded, lovely compliment regardless of the gender involved.

"You're not like other guys!" = Other men are bad, and I thought you were bad because you're a man but actually I'm pleasantly surprised that you're not!

That's a jerk thing to say, I wouldn't want a compliment from that person.

True, I guess I'd only considered it in the context of someone who was genuinely trying to give a compliment, not someone who was just saying whatever to try to get laid. Either way it's still pretty poo poo. Get some better game.

I don't care if a female thinks other men are bad and the best thing she can say about me is that I'm not as bad as them, I just care that she doesn't take off with her jetpack and instead does the sex with me.

Just the whole attitude of it winds me up. You could apply the logic of this comic to any compliment to make it seem backhanded -
"You are a nice person" "Are you saying other people aren't nice?"
"I like you" "Are you suggesting that other people are unlikable?"

The whole 'it implies that if she engages in the same behaviour as 'other girls' she will lose her value' is just dumb as hell and I feel really badly for someone who constantly walks around with the need to deconstruct the language of other people looking for perceived insults.

Like, a loving relationship IS a comparison and value exercise! Why else would you choose any one person over others if there wasn't something about them that stood out to you? Does the woman in this comic go on to find someone else who says "You are just like other people, which is ok because all people are good" because to me that is what sounds backhanded, AND she would be devaluing her original partner if she were to go and find someone else, because he acted in a way that she didn't like. Also, her new relationship partner doesn't actually have to like anything about her (because everyone has likable traits!), so it wouldn't be fair to those other people if he were to suggest that her traits are better than theirs.

I've spent way too long thinking about this, but that's because its so loving stupid and I have the whole day off.
