Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy remains one of my favorite films on Netflix and will get recommended in here every time I rewatch it. It's easily the most intelligent, intense, slow burn spy flick I've ever seen. It'll probably take a careful viewing or a rewatch to really catch everything that happens, but it's so worth it.

I'm going to rewatch this tonight. I haaaated it the first time I saw it but I admittedly really had trouble following along.

7 eps into High Castle season 2 and yeah it's miles better than 1. The love triangle is dead, and everyone's plot is doing something interesting. We'll see how the finale bears out but S1 was a hesitant recommend based on tone and worldbuilding for me and now I'd say it's definitely worth it just because you'll get to head to S2 afterwards.

Just finished Season 2 of Man in the High Castle. It finishes strong but everything that happens with the resistance in SF and Julianna is laughably bad.

Rocky V isn't as bad as everybody says. The idea that Rocky has everything he ever made stolen away from him after his biggest success is an interesting concept. There's stupid moments like using a bunch of hip-hop in the soundtrack, having a Don King impersonator, and being super heavy-handed with the kid stuff but it felt true to the series outside of the final fight and the credits song.

Honestly, it would have been even better if they went with the original idea for the ending of Rocky dying as a result of the final fight. That and a different soundtrack and I think it would be remembered in a much better light.

Yeah, but the existence of Balboa and Creed make not going in that direction 100 percent worth it.

There were two sequels to Paradise Lost - a second one that showed the results of public reaction to the first one - kind of a "where are they now? still in prison wtf?" and then a third one that covered their final release. I recall they were both pretty good if you were deep into the first one.

Check out "The Making Of A Murderer" - I think it's up now. It was on HBO last year, and holy poo poo.

I think I must be a pretentious rear end in a top hat because five episodes into the OA and I really like it. I really like that something so weird was made and how all the actors clearly bought into the weirdness. The first 40 minutes of episode one were really bad but I have loved everything after the title screen.

The Jinx was better because it was much better paced and had such an amazing ending, Making of a Murderer wasn't bad but it could have been half as long and lost nothing.

That said, the pushback against Making of a Murderer was hilarious because it gave us such gems as using the fact that he owned pornography as proof that he must be a killer, or citing a pair of "shackles" as a smoking gun only to have it come out that they were fuzzy bondage cuffs with a quick-release button that made them impossible to use to actually restrain someone.

Yeah, that was a real gut punch knowing nothing about contemporary Lucha Libre. Blue Demon, Jr. is like a real life Captain America, but Captain Mexico, there's a lot of great tragic pathos to it.

Also - beefcake. Most of these guys were okay, but I remember thinking Perro especially was really loving handsome.

edit:

There's so much unstated psychological tension, like how it's just mentioned in passing that a lot of places have lost their Lucha Libre culture because of the rise of drug cartels. It's one thing knowing Superman can't actually do anything to stop Hitler, but when your own national superheroes are literally fleeing from the bad guys, that's got to sting.

I am far from a movie snob. Explaining why I find something boring or not entertaining seems like a difficult thing to do. I guess its just not for me. Here is what I remember.

not ever trying to be superior to anyone especially in a matter of opinion ... I guess Ive always heard great things about it, which is why I watched it in the first place, and I have just never "got it", in that way. So when I say it was boring... first that's my honest opinion and second I guess Im hoping someone could explain what Im missing. I honestly like to enjoy things that are good.

My posting is boring and trite, in fact its kind of like my thing.

In case anybody was wondering he's talking about Sicario. Pretty good critique, mind if I use this rhetorical style in the future? Reductive plot synopsis in place of actually thinking about what you're watching could prove useful for my new Youtube career.

I really wanted to like that movie, but just couldn't. Even with the style and use of puppets and stop-motion, it all just felt so boring and bland and pointless. Like, I understood what the movie was saying, and that pointlessness was part of that, but Jesus it was so...blah. It makes it worse that there were so many elements I liked about it, but that didn't help make it any less boring.

I watched Spectral the other day, and it seemed the product of someone whose favorite movies growing up were movies like Aliens, Ghostbusters, Terminator, etc. but they didn't like any of the characters, just the guns and stuff. It's watchable, and a fine way to spend a couple of hours, but doesn't really hold up to any kind of scrutiny.

This man speaks the truth. Its not cable anymore! Don't pay for services you're not watching and experiment with all of them because they almost all give you a free month every year or six months. When i worked at netflix we were specifically instructed not to try to get people not to cancel, and you can also just do it online. You get the rest of that pay period to watch, and if you call and are nice can sometimes get it refunded.

I guess I'm an old fogie then, but the 20 or so bones I pay for Hulu and Netflix a month (atop my cable subscription 'natch) doesn't really make me wanna cancel it so far, usually I watch a thing or two from each service each month anyway, and there's usually a couple of binges involved there too (right now its Hulu all the time, but I still haven't watched Planet Earth yet for example).

Hopping around and cancelling stuff doesn't seem like enough of win for me to go through the (miniscule) hassle I guess.

And Amazon, I pay yearly, and abuse the poo poo out of the free shipping with my Amazon Prime.

This sums Spectral up pretty well. Imo worth 1 free watch, but I was a little bored at times. I won't remember it exists in a month.

The border crossing scene in Sicario is tense as gently caress and how anyone can call a movie boring when that masterpiece of a scene is in it is just baffling. Also, Josh Brolin"s character is such a smarmy rear end in a top hat and I love it. Also also, Roger Deakins is an amazing cinematographer and Sicario is a gorgeous movie to watch at least, even if you think the story itself is lacking.

I feel like I might have partially kicked off this tangent, so I should probably clarify that I didn't find it boring at all, quite the opposite, but I didn't expect the opening 1/3 or so to be so muted in tone and I was smacked-rear end tired so I fell asleep anyway.

I just finished Mythbusters 2: Where Are The Mythbusters (White Rabbit Project) on Netlix. It wasn't bad. I haven't watched real Mythbusters in like close to 10 years but this show doesn't have nearly as much COMING UP NEXT/WHEN WE LEFT OFF loving annoying recaps so it's way more watchable. Still has the awkward scripted exposition scenes though.
