I use a little pair of cutters with a stripper mechanism in the handle most of the time: Really good when space is tight under dashboards etc.

I had some of those right-angle strippers you linked, I really liked it until I broke it using it on too thick of a gauge. Now I have these and like them fine, although I'll probably buy another pair like you linked in the future.

I hate you guys, you just convinced me to buy my fourth pair of automatic wire strippers because maybe these Klein katapults will finally be the ones that actually work for me

Pretty sure I have a pair of ideal stripmasters at work. They work great, and I avoided using automatic strippers for the last 20 years because the radioshack ones I had as a kid pissed me off so much. Related: keep them lubed with whatever the manufacturer recommends, or something like a wd40 wipe once in a while, because if the gripping or stripping jaws get some flash rust on them from humidity you will be very frustrated, they jam easily.

Whelp, I officially take back everything bad I said about automatic wire strippers, these Klein katapults worked awesome for wiring in a new circuit to the bathroom heater I just installed. Worked exactly like I hoped they would. The two irwin self adjusting strippers I bought/exchanged awhile back (and the HF equivalent) were all completely worthless though. Could not even strip a solid 14g wire.

I've use a few pairs of the autos and really enjoyed them when they work right. Sounds like the Ideal pair is going to be best for what I want. I'll have to look into the right angle style it seems.

So it's not always bad. That reminds me that I need to take an adjustable wrench I found over there to see if I can get a non rusty one.

How are wera's socket sets? The $30 set on amazon looks rather fancy, they are 6 point, 3/8 drive, color coded and the set comes with all the sizes I use regularly save 8mm (which is an additional $10). I have an impact set for anything that requires me actually bashing on it, this would just be for average everyday stuff. I plan on picking up a set of their laser tip screwdrivers for myself with some christmas money I was given for that purpose, this is just a tempting side purchase.

I don't know how many of you have a Meijer nearby, but I was in there tonight and they had buy one get one half off on Tekton stuff. Someone beat me to the ratcheting wrenches, but for basic sockets/wrench sets they are a great value.

I got a brand new 1/4" ratchet from Sears under warranty a couple years ago and that thing won't even get anything wrist tight without skipping teeth. Ended up buying a flex head ratchet (on "sale" for ~$70) off our Snap On rep one day when it was really pissing me off. I use it every day so I guess I don't really regret it but I really hate paying tool truck prices for tools and I resent Sears every time I think about how much I paid for my dumb little ratchet.

If you live near a state border you may find wildly different prices/discounts based on state incentives. HD and Lowes have them too.

Yeah it's those lights and they are normally $30 at Costco, or around that much. They go on sale for $20-25 occasionally. In fact, I just wired up 4 in my garage and it's super bright now. I'll post pictures later. The ones listed above are the older model, too. The new ones are linkable.

I bought the longer version of that exact ratchet. It is amazing and often used for breaking free bleeder screws on big truck drums. My next ratchet set I purchase is definitely gear wrench or Carlisle. They both are probably the best bang for the buck in the ratchet game right now.

I love that Rigol's response to the firmware hacking was basically "Cool trick. Just be aware that we practice binning so some of the lower-badged models may not perform at the higher spec, but we're not going to cat and mouse hackers. Have at it. Oh, and we'll lower the price on the higher tier model too." Made me like them a lot.

From what I've read on forums, the current firmware is still hackable, they also come around used every once in a while. I also really like Rigol's power supplies, but they are too pricey for what I'd use one for. Is there a go-to for a good digital DC power supply?
|
# ? Dec 26, 2016 15:33 |

Their power supplies are nice, but not budget-level. For something basic, I always recommend one of the many Chinese rebadged supplies: like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/30V-5A-Prec...ioAAOSw9IpX1kwC I'd put it under load and run it for a week to make sure it holds up. I've got 2 similar ones, one 30V 5A, one 60V 3A. I've also got a BK precision 1687B 30V 10A switchmode, and a big cheap linear BK 1671A 30V 5A with dedicated 12 and 5 VDC outputs. If you need something with precision, look at used HP/Agilent or other major MFR gear on eBay. This is overpriced, but gives you an idea. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-6038A-HP...lEAAOSw6DtYWaex You can check the calibration with a recently calibrated multimeter... big linears like those usually don't die, and there may be calibration docs online. sharkytm fucked around with this message at 20:10 on Dec 26, 2016 |

My brother bought me a half inch drive craftsman impact, but he didn't know I don't have an air compressor. Do I realistically have any options for an air compressor I can cart in and out of my basement? I'd probably just use it to rotate tires. I don't recall anything useful being posted until you get in the 200-300 dollar range, which is more than I'd spend. Alternatively, anything I need to do to keep it in good shape until I buy a compressor in a year or two?

I had success with a little 8 gallon air compressor for just doing lug nuts but looking at amazon that's pretty much in the 200-300 range like you mentioned. My local craigslist usually has lots of little air compressors that would probably work in the $50-100 range.

QuarkMartial posted:My brother bought me a half inch drive craftsman impact, but he didn't know I don't have an air compressor. Craigslist will have a good cheap air compressor that will do lug nuts. It may need a minute or two between wheels to refill but it will work. And for air gun care if you don't use it. Just put some drops of air tool oil in it maybe 2 to 3 times a month at most. They will be ok even if you don't. Just make sure to oil it and run it with no socket for a few seconds on I initiall use.
