Fat chance of thar happening. I've wanted a truck like this for years. But you can't really find the big farm trucks like this one down here.

Every other one I ever came across was either expensive, or in much worse shape. The only "cheap" 4400 I came across down in FL used to be a Grove sprayer. It was rusty as gently caress and had a tank full of what I'm sure was some manner of cancer causing chems in it.

And he also want $1200 for it.

So what are the ultimate plans for this beast, anyway? Obviously I don't know you or your life, but I can't think of a good use for a 60 year old medium-duty dump truck. Not making GBS threads on your ideas here, I'm just curious what you have in mind. I will throw my vote in for a modern 8.1L BBC though. Looks like you may need a new steering solution to get it in there, but I think it would be a great engine for this thing.

Is this truck still even a medium duty by today's standards? I thought medium duty trucks, according to the DOT, are actually dump trucks like F750s and up or poo poo made by International and Kenworth, bigger than your average 1 ton dually (regardless of how many "heavy duty" stickers plaques it has). Is the frame of this truck actually safe enough to be put back to real commercial work?

depending on the thickness/material of the frame, its probably fine for an old class 4 truck. Its also a "medium" duty classification. Light is class 1-3, med is 4-6, heavy is 7 and 8.

IMO? grab a camper and throw on it.

Yeah I'm sure it's fine. We have a f550 stake/dump bed at work, that is basically the same as this old girl. It's not meant to be loaded like a big dump truck.

Having tried this in the past this is the worst idea. Unless you like being covered in chunks of molten rubber.

Besides, even if he did this he still , has to pull the rims apart to get the new tires on

Nah. Needs a ton of (expensive) parts to make real power, and it shares nothing with the earlier gens (I through VI). GenVII was pretty much a total do-over, to make it more LS-like. But the heads aren't magical like the LS, and there's only one company making heads, cams, intake, etc. If modern-ish BBC is your goal, go with a GenVI and stick a cam in there. That's as modern as you can go to still have plural aftermarket suppliers.

Are the 8.1s not just the last evolution of the Mark IVs? I know a lot more about SBCs than BBCs so my opinion's not really worth much anyway. :v:

Edit: Ok, if I'm reading right, I guess the last 454 (L29/L21) was the last Gen VI and then the 8.1 started the VII, yeah? If that's the case then yeah, I'd probably go with the 7.4L/454. Plus, he could get some old Chevelle SS badges for the truck.

Well, sort of. The geometry is pretty similar and the block is based on the Gen6 454, but:

Hot Rod posted:

Changes were made to the block’s oil-pan rails, all fasteners are Metric, and the 18-point head-bolt pattern (two more than the 396–502) is radically different and doesn’t begin to accept factory or aftermarket big-block heads. Thus, the 8100 block isn’t of much use to traditional Chevy big-block builders

Hot Rod posted:

The 8100’s LS-style port spacing and 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 firing order prevent the use of traditional big-block camshafts.

I agree it's not any use for hot rodding, but it's a good truck motor, and an aftermarket tune (getting rid of GM torque management) will get some very usable low end grunt.

Also, can find a donor truck pretty cheaply.

Well, I just like the way it looks. But I'd like to clean it up and put it to use as a toy hauler or what have you. I've thought about extending the bed, (Or frame swapping it) to use a car carrier too. But ultimately, I'd like to use it as a truck.
Plans do include patching all the holes, repainting it from the frame up, new, more modern wheels, power steering, power brakes, disc brakes in the front at least, and A/C. And radio of course. I'd like to keep as much of the stock look on the outside, while having much more modern stuff on the inside. If there's one thing I hate, it's when people do resto-mods like this and ruin the look. Or when they get those awful "modern" dashboards that are just flat foam panels.

That's why I like the 8.1. Assuming it fits of course it seems like makes a pretty decent amount of horsepower and torque stock, and seems to be pretty plentiful. Although I'm open to other suggestions at this point.

I guess so, but if Sims wants a big block I think he can do better with a late model 454 and some goodies, a la the engine in Stubby Bob, which made 428HP/507ft-lb with just a cam and springs.

E: I suppose, though, if this is going to be a fairly high-spend project, Sims can always just throw the Raylar catalog at an 8100 and make good power. I just like the apparent relative ease of making the GenVI get up and go.
