Still useful for tipping people when a money transaction is not otherwise involved (checking baggage at the terminal, some valet services, etc.) and for buying things on Craigslist. Easy enough just to stop by a bank or get cash from a debit purchase at a grocery store or gas station.

The only time I use cash at all these days is for the laundry card here in my apartment complex. The units don't have their own washer/driers so you use the public washers on the bottom floor. However, you don't put cash or quarters in them. You have this card that you load with money that you then stick in the machine. But you can't load it with a card; cash only. It's...stupid.

ATM skimming is fuckin' crazy. https://krebsonsecurity.com/all-about-skimmers/ I do ATM security for work, haven't seen anything on the level of the whole facade but there's been some really sophisticated skimmers. Some even fit inside the card slot so you can't do the pull test to see if it's legit.

I said "No thank you.", he let me go and then I checked all of my pockets to make sure nothing was stolen. I still can't tell if he was just a really bad pickpocket or if that was actually how he got customers.

The first time I was in NYC (and the US), literally the very first thing I saw after getting out of the PATH station was some cops roughing up a black guy up against the wall. Maybe it was the same dealer/pickpocket guy. Come to think of it, this is probably a good operating model - steal drugs form one person and immediately sell them to somebody else. This way you don't have to keep a large inventory and risk getting busted with it. It's just-in-time dealing.
