If they were sane by conventional standards they wouldn't be in there in the first place :smugmrgw:

Pretty sure I read in a thread years ago that on a mission/training exercise where a nuclear submarine had to go deep and silent for some extended amount of time the guy driving the boat plotted a course to trace a giant cock and balls on the nav chart.

A fine use of tax payer dollars if you ask me.

A lot of these outfits would have their own guys who'd know how to look for and disarm ieds and booby traps. They would probably have learnt the hard way but the ones who are still alive are often pretty good. There is a guy who set up a landmine museum in Cambodia who's worth looking up.

It's this. Your clients can be whatever but still lol windows xp I say as I look at my large number of HMIs still running xp. At least in the industrial space it's a very bad idea cause things are increasingly networked in the modern factory so the isolated control networks are being opened up more than ever before.

Though XP is indeed lovely it's probably fine assuming everyone does exactly what they are supposed to and no one does something insanely stupid. I can guarantee there is a way to get external data into these machines with a little ingenuity and physical access since they are all on a network of some variety even if it is isolated.

Looks like standard scaffolder working practice to me. I saw a similar guy stop 3 floors up a half finished scaffold and lean back against the wall using the horizontal bar to brace his feet on while he texted as there was no boarding yet.

Edit: I guarantee you they will gently caress that roof up as well but then again it has so much moss on it I guess it's being replaced anyway.

In which case they'll gently caress it up when they taken the scaffolding down instead :v:

It was a mix of training and the holster type. He was using an unfamiliar SERPA holster which has you press a button with your index finger to release the gun (the button is in line with the trigger) and won't let you press the button if you're pulling up on the gun. So following his muscle memory he tugged right before pressing, the gun got stuck, and he curled his finger to try and get more leverage on it. When the gun finally came out, the finger he was pushing hard with slipped into the trigger guard and hit the trigger.

Pretty much. You can't train a bunch on one holster until it's muscle memory and then just swap holsters without something going wrong.

Physical security is a bait and switch with respect to operating system though. If you have physical access the system is going to be yours at some point whether its XP, 7, a unix derivative etc. No idea how ship hardware talks but industrial control networks need some way to update and need some way to communicate with hardware. So you can get in on usb, cds, or whatever the designed input is for software or images, or you can get a man in the middle with a network splice.

Stuxnet famously proved industrial control systems are absolutely filthy with worms because of poor information safety hygiene. I haven't read any detailed reports but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it starts at the OEM level so you can't even blame him when Joe Operator sticks his infected MP3 usb into his control console for some late night tunes.

I was slightly terrified when I learned the controls engineer could VPN into the engineering console to make limited changes to configs but have since forgot about it until this conversation reminded me so maybe sign me up as someone being complacent about systems using network vulnerable software for no good reason. But I think most outfits don't offer VPN support on engineering consoles outside their latest and greatest offerings but the last time I was that deep into DCSs was like 8 years ago when XP was that latest and greatest offering after just come onto the scene after passing the FMEAs and a huge part of the install base was Windows NT based.
