is there some reason that cattail usually writes marumi's name with the squiggly letters, and hokuto's with the boxy ones? this is like the only thing i know about the japanese language, that they have 2 different sets of phonetic letters, but i'm pretty sure i can recognize the name "hokuto" when i see it, just from having watched so many panda videos

I've seen a lot of shows write out traditional Japanese names with katakana (the boxy, less flourishy characters) and am wondering that as well.

As far as writing Hokuto's name in Katakana goes, I imagine that it's just to distinguish it as a proper noun, instead of just being the Japanese word. I can only speculate as to why Marumi is written in Hiragana, but I'd guess that either it doesn't equate to a normal word since, IIRC, her name is a portmanteau of Maruyama and something else, or its to signify her young age, since Hiragana is the first writing system one learns and is accordingly associated with kids. More generally, per riverninja's question, Katakana can also serve as emphasis or equivalent to all-caps.

From what I can piece together from MMmovie's google-translated blog, there is a hill named "Marumi" visible from the zoo. I don't know if that helps at all. i actually discovered that chrome and google will match the other script when you type it into the ctrl+f box or do a search. searching google found a company called marumi that was spelled in katakana.
