I can see it's a ploy to make the coming disasters in Russia and Qatar look like the best tournaments in hindsight.

Why does everyone think the Russian World Cup itself will be a disaster? They got it through massive corruption and will spend a bunch of money that the population needs more, but I don't see any hurdles to them putting on an enjoyable event for the fans.

Qatar is hosed though, no amount of money can deal with the heat, weird cultural laws or lack of a team.

Yeah, Russians will definitely be out in force to kick the poo poo out of non-whites and gay people. But this is TRP, so we just make tired jokes about athleticism and poo poo.

Actually, since there won't be anything resembling the Olympic Village, and a lot of what was upon the organizing committee in Sochi will rest upon the private sector in 2017/18, it's more likely than not that everything will vary greatly from city to city. I can totally see cities like Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad hosting their respective parts without a hitch, and back asswards shitheaps like Saransk, Sochi, or Rostov loving everything up so spectacularly that it will dwarf anything anyone saw in RSA, Brazil, or Sochi

There is only one thing that will be a universal constant throughout the entire tournament and it's that there will be a lot of riot police everywhere

If 3rd world countries like South Africa and Brazil were able to host the World Cup, Russia will be fine.

It's been a while since the vote, but could someone refresh my memory as to how Russia won the vote? I'm assuming it was bribes, FIFA looking to "expand the game", people wanting to gently caress over England, Spain and Portugal, and Russia having a bunch of political connections to small countries like Venezuela, Cuba, Syria, Iran and Belarus? There hasn't been nearly as much press about the Russia vote as compared to the Qatar vote.

so nobody's expecting any Argentina-level shenanigans with Russia, a team currently banned from the olympics for cheating?

Imagine the Korea wc except with players that might actually be able to win a game if the refs cheat hard enough

I'm pretty sure the entire Russian team could go to Rich Piana levels of juicing and they'd still go out to Nigeria in the second round

2) Zimbabwe FA head Phillip Chiyangwa – multimillionaire Youtuber AKA Captain Fiasco – on how he won the Council of Southern Africa FAs presidency last month. “I had to apply my master’s technique. President Mugabe taught me that if you apply the scorched earth approach, you won’t go wrong. I used tactics I was taught by the grandmaster Mugabe, and here I am.”

• Chiyangwa’s next ambition: “I’m now the boss of the region. Very soon I will be the boss of the continent. Don’t be surprised when that happens. And I won’t stop there. You know Fifa hasn’t been run by a black person? I have set myself that target.”

• Also on Chiyangwa’s to-do list last week: stopping Zimbabwe’s players striking before the Africa Cup of Nations in a row over money, hotels and facilities after his FA failed to pay a $60 pitch rental fee. “Everything is in order. Everything is better than before.”

Russia won the bid with oil money but it's defensible because they have an actual league and stadiums and so on, and could run a World Cup without building the entire thing from scratch. It was the worst of the 2018 bids (only one not rated low risk, up against England, Belgium/Netherlands, and Spain/Portugal any of which could have hosted it easily), and it will probably have issues with facilities in some of the poorer cities and with Russian fans, but if you tilt your head and apply FIFA's stated logic of wanting to take the game to new places you can kind of understand it after SA and Brazil.

But Qatar is so obviously corrupt that it makes it abundantly clear that Russia bribed their way to it too.

My favourite Qatar story is when Sepp said he had actually rigged the vote in favour of the US and was super pissed when it turned out the Qataris had rigged it better than him.

The Sochi Olympics (for some unknown reason) boasts a trio of strange animal mascots, each one creepier than the last. The polar bear, which Deadspin very accurately dubbed “Nightmare Bear,” is definitely the most unsettling.

The robotic versions featured in the opening ceremony are even worse. Dubbed by some as the “Scare Bear,” USA Today reports that NBC didn’t even show the mascots during the television broadcast on Friday night.
