I get what you're saying, but I'm way more annoyed when people say Hitler did nothing wrong instead of saying some left leaning stuff. There are some places where politics don't belong (although metal review sites probably aren't one of those places!), but it is fuckin stupid to pretend there is an equivalence between like saying a band is problematic and saying black people have the wrong skull shape or whatever goes on at ANUS nowadays.

They were kind of a mess at CDF last year. Guitarist is half blind now and someone knocked him over trying to stagedive, after which the vocalist chastised the audience for being too rowdy. Violent Restitution still rules though so whatever.

After finally getting around to listening to In flames latest album, I realized that in contrast to other bands that start with some generic pop teenage angst and end up evolving to something else, In flames have decided to do the opposite thing and end up where many bands start. On something else more relevant, Cult of Luna's latest with Julie Christmas is pretty great. I like bands with female singers that manage to sound aggressive and are looking for some recommendations. Basically I am looking for something similar to Cult of Luna's latest, Angela Gossow when she was in Arch Enemy or Crucified Barbara. Nightwish style with clean vocals is no no. Something similar to Myrkur screaming is also no no.

One of the many reasons Mariner is great is the vocal dynamics between Julie and the Cults singer. Especially since it is not your generic growling + clear female vocals. I listened a bit to Myrkur some time ago, which apparently is black metal. But there the singing was either too much screeching or too clear vocals. Thanks to all for the recommendations.

Especially since I know SR Prozac/Brett Stevens has been writing about metal since ANUS was just text files on an FTP site, meaning he's probably over 40 years old. I think what happened is that Prozak really got into twitter in the last few years. I mean the dude has rolled with white supremacists online for a super long time (the old forum on anus.com more or less functioned as a recruitment tool for the National Alliance, going back to 15 years ago even) but the rise of gamergate and the "alt right" on the internet kicked his activities into overdrive. Now it's just endless rants about SJWs and posts about cyberstalking Kim Kelly.

Some of the songs have cheesy lyrics straight out of a generic fantasy novel from the 90s but the sound of Agalloch is pretty drat good and memorable.

New album by Pain of Salvation came out on Friday. Any of you goons give it a listen? I'm loving it. Super excited to see them next month. I was already excited, but the last 2 times I saw them wasn't spectacular just because I'm not a huge fan of Ragnar's voice. At least, not when he's covering parts sung by Johan. But now that an album has come out with his voice in mind during the creative process, he's much better. They're only playing in 8 cities in the US this year and one of them is my crappy little city which never gets anyone. Last two times I got to see them live required multi-hour drives, each way. No idea how this happened but I'm stoked. And in response to the discussion from the previous page: I do not understand the purpose of music journalism / album reviews. 3/10 of this album was available online before it came out. Opeth also released 3/11 of Sorceress online prior to launch. Then it's immediately on Spotify and YouTube. I can make my own decision, the music is available easily enough. So... Why bother reading what Joe Schmoe thought of an album when I can listen to it at no additional cost to me very soon?

Album reviews arent useful for bands you already know and like. I use them to have someone tell me ''hey, check out this band you dont know, it might be good!''. There is way too much music being released and i need some way to filter it.

Music journalism is a lot more than album reviews lol But to answer your question, some people don't even want to take the time to listen to something if they don't think they'll like it. Others just enjoy having their taste validated by someone with an air of authority. And bands like reviews because they can use critical acclaim as a marketing tool. This is why everyone who's ever written any kind of music review for any outlet is bombarded by publicists asking for reviews all the time.
