drat near every Asian place up here is labeled as a "Teriyaki" establishment and it's weird as gently caress. I mean, they're still good, and it's perfectly fine, but why call it Teriyaki?

Leperflesh posted:Two or three of the items on the menu taste quite good. That's not enough to make it worth the price, though, considering two or three items on practically any menu of any restaurant anywhere probably taste pretty good, and good cheap chinese food is pretty widespread. Maybe Mark just likes the atmosphere? Can confirm there are teriyaki places everywhere around seattle, but that's because teriyaki owns. Some also do sushi or something else as well. But it's not like a pho place will call themselves a teriyaki place. got any sevens fucked around with this message at 13:30 on Jan 16, 2017 |

Yeah it's kinda weird, I'm from Washington but live out east. You don't see teryaki joints out here. Think it's mostly shorthand for cheap Japanese food. The Chinese and Korean (and of course Vietnamese) restaurants don't typically use that word, from what I remember.TBeats posted:Teriyaki is delicious. When I went to WWU there was a place down the street named Super Teryaki, mismatched furniture and bare linoleum floors but delicious cheap teryaki chicken. County closed it down after it was cited for more health code violations than the kitchen at the county jail. Quietly reopened as Super Duper Teryaki, new furniture and a slightly different menu. Not. As. Good. Another thing that I had to leave before I realized it was a NW thing: drive through coffee stands, eeeeeverywhere.

It's sort of mind boggling to me that any Chinese and especially any Korean place would use that word in their name or description. I'd be kind of interested to know why this is so different on the west coast vs. the NYC area.

Keep in mind that the first teriyaki restaurant in US was (apparently) up here in Seattle and it has become a staple for the region. That being said, the term is ubiquitous all over the PNW, even in restaurants where they specialize in non-teriyaki dishes. PF Changs is basically Asian inspired Red Lobster of the west coast.

I'd be more worried about the burn hazard, there is a reason why most real baristas wear aprons.
