When money is no object to you, and you've never had to consider making your own, or it ever running out, then getting a new car and losing a new car doesn't really elicit any strong emotions, since whatever you could possibly ever want is just a call to daddy away. I've been saying for years amidst all the "Yankee go home!" attitudes that you see from lots of US allies that is dangerous because these guys don't seem to understand just how much of the current world order exists at the whims of the US and it's vindicating to see the rhetoric change from "Warmongering Americans, I hope you decline!" to "Oh poo poo come back please."

Also really weird to see people saying that we're at the end of the American century when apparently the US can alter the entire global order with a single presidential election. Yeah definitely a sign of declining US influence.

This reminded me of something. I would like to take a moment to say that I have done something just like this here in China while walking and looking at my phone. Luckily it was at sunset on a weekend and very few people were around. I got kinda bashed up on the concrete because the fountain was not a traditional pool-style, and more of an artsy fartsy thing. My phone didn't get wet, but my shoes and legs up past the knees did.

The security guard that watched it happen didn't say anything, but I am sure he had quite the story to tell later.

Anyway I am sitting on the couch now. Why? Because the morning went like this:

Me: *looks outside* Hey it's a beautiful day! Kids, get dressed, let's go outside!
Wife: No, my mom is making lunch, what if they spill food on themselves?
Me: They're 4 and 6 years old!
Wife: ... ?

an hour later ...

Me: Ok kids, let's get dressed so we can play outside and come back when your grandmother finishes making lunch
Kid 1: nonononono
Kid 2: I will only go out if Kid 1 goes out.
Wife: They don't want to go out. Here, practice this English poem for school.

AN HOUR LATER

Me: GET DRESSED KIDS. LET'S GO OUTSIDE.
Wife: Can you not let them run around? We have a birthday party at 4pm. I don't want them to be tired when we go out.
Me: It's 11am!!!
Wife: ... ?

So now it's almost noon, kids are still in pyjamas, and I'm waiting for the lunch to be served so I can take the kids out of the goddamn apartment so we can enjoy the sunshine, sort-of fresh air (pollution index is Orange today, sigh, but at least we can see blue sky, not like last week). I simply do not understand why getting the kids out of the house is such a bloody chore.

Isn't going outside and enjoying it a "Western" concept anyway? I mean, I can understand why given the pollution problem, but it's still strange to think considering how landscape art seems to be such a huge part of traditional Chinese painting.

Like I said, it's the Trump effect. Trump said China was bad and wants to implement policies that will hurt China, therefore China must actually be good and implementing such policies will be a huge mistake.

It's now 12:30 and no lunch yet. Apparently wife and mother-in-law agreed that they would have stir-fried niangao (new year rice cakes) which takes ten minutes, but later said because wife wasn't "enthusiastic enough" she decided to do the usual 5 dishes Chinese meal, so she's still chopping vegetables. It has now been almost three hours since I initially tried taking the kids out.

***

Ok now it's almost 1pm, the food came out and we ate. As we finished and I got the kids' stuff ready like heavy winter coats ("But it's blazing sun out and the kids are going to run around the playground, we don't need it." "It's winter."), my wife reminded me that Kid 1 has not made a birthday card for the party this afternoon. So the whole morning when Kid 1 was playing around, doing math exercises etc while wife was watching Chinese comedy talk shows on the computer, it never occurred to her that we should do necessary things first and fun but unnecessary things second.

I think a problem with the average North American now jumping onto the Chinese Century Train because of Trump is that it's very believable to them and other gullards, so it's easy to spread around on social media. The regular lovely media can pick up on this and help promote it to get more views, and then it might spread further. Foreign countries will see/hear about stronger countries "worrying" about China and then they might jump on this idiotic bandwagon. Chinese propaganda, wumaos, and paid news can infiltrate more easily (as we see they are trying every day regardless), and then every type of Fox News style garbage across the world can push the narrative of China now quickly rising to Supreme Super Power while we're all left in the dust wallowing in amazing at their falsified/invented numbers and accomplishments.

Imperialist Dog posted:

It actually sounds like you have no authority in your own house and are letting your kids turn into a bunch of TCM-cultured scaredy cats that will fall over in fear at the slightest breeze or drop of rain, shoving piles of antibiotics into themselves to get recover from the violent illness caused by natural phenomena.
