Me and my girlfriend have a venue we rent out for private parties. One night some of the guests got too drunk started smashing stuff, my girlfriend told them to stop so they started smashing more stuff. Called the police and they didn't like that, some girl slapped my girlfriend, so my girlfriend grabbed her by the hair and started smashing bottles into her face and it all kicked off. 20 vs 2, we won, my girlfriend is loving vicious. Police don't really give a poo poo here, they put you in a room to sort it out yourselves, if you haven't after a few hours they'll get involved. So had to sit around at the police station til about 5am before they gave us a few thoasand kuai.

Daegu people also shouldn't start poo poo since they also tend to fight for real. Actually pretty much anywhere south of Seoul so I guess I realized I'm pretty wrong for half of Korea in retrospect. In comparison Hongdae is slap fights and sometimes hilarious bits where people break bottles and then slip and fall on boiling hot pots in the process, Itaewon is foreigners starting fights with other foreigners and Gangnam can be iffy but worst I saw was a guy getting bottled pretty bad in a big club though he had it coming. aeglus fucked around with this message at 15:34 on Jan 23, 2017 |

In my first month in Korea I was getting some food with a weirdo brit expat (I later found out he was super into trains and nonstop posted about how good brexit is) who lived around my hood. On the way back I saw 2 sober 40ish Korean guys beating the absolute dogshit out of a completely shitfaced dude while a woman cried out hysterically. I am talking full force face punches and slamming his head into a car door and leaving dents. Eventually one the guys cocked back and accidentally elbowed the woman which put an end to the beat down. I thought Korea was gonna be off the loving chain after that, alas, 5 years later I aint seen anything I would even call a fight since.

I was putting lotion on my wife to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy (you don't normally start at 5 weeks, but I'm not complaining) and thought about (the idea of) moving to China with our baby. I obviously would never consider it, but I thought it would be interesting to get her perspective on it. Her reply sort of surprised me in it's directness. "Nope! That would be a very bad idea for a developing baby to be exposed to all of that pollution, and what if he/she got sick? Where would we take it? I don't trust . . . " (she trailed off as something got interesting in her card game on her phone)

Haha, with a 7m rise in sea level, Hong Kong loses the airport and Tin Shui Wai, which is a district that used to be flooded farms and now houses poor people in public housing. Sad, but manageable. Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta cities are completely hosed. Anyway, picture time. A few days back I had to go to Southern District (the southern half of Hong Kong Island) for a bagpiping job. It was in a factory estate; basically, think of a giant apartment block, but instead of having flats to people to live in, each flat is a workshop or factory manufacturing or storing something, with huge cargo lifts to move products from the 25th floor to the loading dock. As manufacturing moved out of Hong Kong, many of these spaces are taken over by entrepreneurs (and families looking for a place to live that is bigger than a shoebox; naturally, the government has deemed these illegal). One of these spaces had been turned into a restaurant by an Israeli, with HK and Filipina staff, and the restaurant was booked by a Scottish architect who had spent the previous 20 years in Singapore. You meet interesting people here. When I got off the bus, I noticed this written in correction fluid. It says "Insect Wen Jiabao" and is an insult to the former Chinese Premier, who had some "quiet" business connections in Hong Kong and is yet another target in Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign, I think. There's a misshapen umbrella above it so it's probably from 2014. Also, the final simplified character is written incorrectly as it's missing the droplet in the 宝. I just thought this was funny. The management will be annoyed if you call the police if you see someone posting something up. On Sunday I was in Tsuen Wan. Originally a sleepy Hakka village, it's grown into a major shopping district and is the final stop on the MTR's red Tsuen Wan Line. Here are what I think are postwar buildings; quick concrete that served a purpose as Hong Kong rebuilt after the war and dealt with the flood of refugees and capitalists fleeing China. I find it odd that the windows have been concreted up. Yesterday I went walking in Kowloon Tong. After the construction of the railway line linking Kowloon with Canton (Guangzhou), the area became very popular with merchants as it was a quick walk to the train station that would take them to their operations in China (until the border closed in 1950 or so it was very common for people to go back and forth between Hong Kong and China). The area became quite rich. Here is a Buddhist temple that shows off some material wealth. For culture shows, how about Cantonese Opera: Mao Zedong? That's what Kowloon Tong looks like now. Here's an original house, meant for a merchant and family, built in combination Chinese-Western style that was popular at the beginning of the 20th century. The whole area used to be full of houses like this; now they are rare and often behind high walls. Some of the properties have been turned into love hotels! There's drive-in space so you can enjoy fun times with your mistress or, if you're a typical Hong Kong family, get away from your parents and your children with your husband/wife. Kowloon Tong is full of quiet back alleys running behind the houses and along the railway line. They're quite fun to explore. Here's an old telephone pole with Japanese-style wire chaos. Going down one of the alleys, I found ... an empty lot! Huge trees and the remains of a tile floor from a big house sitting empty in one of the most expensive areas of Kowloon. What gives? My lawyer friend says it's probably a property dispute between two branches of a rich family; they would rather let the land go idle out of spite instead of reaching a compromise. The wall has crumbled in parts and you can go right in. I know goons have special skills regarding construction, perhaps we could construct a Goonfort; the electrical box for the lot is operational.

Fun fact: you know how the government will build public housing, offering reduced rents etc? In Hong Kong, the colonial government built public factory estates. Some of them are still active today! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_factory_estates_in_Hong_Kong Here's an older industrial building in Kowloon The Shell factory building in Chai Wan. You know how on old maps Hong Kong has "Victoria City" marked on it? It's because everything east of North Point was just factories and docks. The Brits lived in Victoria. Nowadays of course it's all built-up and crammed with people; this particular factory building got turned into a hotel. MIGHT MANUFACTURING STRENGTH THROUGH INDUSTRY
