CJacobs posted:If you are doing the Get A Puppy For A New Kid thing, to be brutally honest the prime time to do it is when the kid is 8-ish. When it's time for the dog to pass into the great hereafter, they'll be old enough and mature enough to come to terms with it, but also not too old that they'll have moved out/etc and will have spent as much time with the doggy as possible. Source: Me and my sister and my first dog, who I loved very much! We got our cat when I was 7, which is a good age. It's probably a good thing we didn't get her younger than that, to be honest, since I don't think she would've liked me very much before I was old enough for her to train me on how to act towards her. (Cats, eh.) Luckily I didn't have to say goodbye until I was 27.

That actually is cute in the sense that is disinterested on their owner. I mean, I'm assuming that it has no effect on milk production or meat tenderness.

Happy cows make more milk, the dairy industry has been moving towards keeping the cows as happy as possible for production reasons. Which, IMO, is every bit as cute and good all the same.

Each dairy cow is a big investment in time and money to keep it healthy and producing, that if you do it right pays off. If a machine like that costs less to operate than the farmer gets back in terms of increased milk, you bet they'll get one. It's just good sense. If it turned out cows produce more if you play them a lullaby and kiss them on the forehead at night, they'd probably do that too. The fact that we get to smile at the cows is just an added benefit.

If it turned out cows produce more if you play them a lullaby and kiss them on the forehead at night, they'd probably do that too. Heated waterbeds. During winter, when cows have to spend more time indoors, rather than lying on hay strewn over concrete, they now have stalls with very sturdy heated waterbeds a few inches deep. Initially they were installed because the waterbeds prevented the formation of the heavy, thick callouses the cows got from sleeping on hard floors and which had to be cut off by vets with all the associated risks of infection and getting kicked in the head by pissed off cows with scabby knees. But they found out the cows loved the waterbeds. And happy cows not only produce more milk, they're less susceptible to disease and stress related disorders and produce sturdier calves. Productivity through kindness, what a thought. Megillah Gorilla has a new favorite as of 04:50 on Jan 25, 2017 |

Some additions: Jay is pretty cool for peanuts Skorl, too, is pretty cool for peanuts. He worked too fast for a good shot. Baba said 'Open Sesame', not 'Open Peanut', what the hell is he supposed to do with a legume? (Not pictured: His buddy and partner in crime Ali) Meanwhile, our cats have been working on a new wave album: Side A Side B Paw PAWS He got stung by a wasp defending our homeland. But that won't keep the cute down. "Stop taking pictures, god drat it."
