Now if he executes the solutions, I'll be pleased.

Barring, of course, Ferrari bribing him.

Chase Carey's bullet point analysis with the problems with F1 as it stands
  • The revenue system is skewed in favour of the already rich and powerful, to the extent that the smallest teams are struggling to survive and money is tight for about half the grid.
  • There is a lack of competition on track.
  • Television audience figures are dropping in many markets - although this is largely because of a switch to pay television, to make more money from TV rights deals.
  • The longest-standing races are struggling to fund themselves and risk dropping off the calendar
  • The decision-making process is not working properly.
  • Some significant business and sporting decisions have been made for solely financial reasons, disregarding other important factors, such as their effects on the sporting side.
  • An acceptance that F1 has lost some of its appeal, particularly a sense of edge and drama and as an extreme driver challenge.

This list is actually pretty good, and even tackling like 3 of these items would make the sport very different. I'm now firmly in the optimistic camp.

Well given that it's in Sky's contract not to show adverts during the race I remain optimistic, also don't the American channels show adverts every 5 laps now anyway? I'm thinking that this is what they mean by going pay per view like they do in Europe (don't forget that C4 had adverts too). It's not paying though the nose either with the new no-contract streaming service Sky have.

Me too but there's like a 99% chance that Sky's contract has a clause which covers their exclusivity against any digital media coverage. Like at the absolute best you're going to have the Sky commentators and an inflated purchase price to cover the chunk of your money going directly to them as direct compensation for not needing a satellite dish.

They're evil shits but they're not dumb evil shits.

Sky have digital media coverage now though. Sky Go as part of your satellite coverage and Now TV which is no contact streaming. Where it's looking good for the Americans is how close Carey is to Murdock and co. I would wonder if some sort of deal for the American broadcast rights to the F1 channel is already with the lawyers. Practically speaking it's just a case of allowing the yank IPs to use Now TV and making the channel available to them.

While that would be nice, but considering Carey started Fox Sports and Murdoch pretty well runs all the Pay TV networks in the world, there's going to be massive conflicts of interest there.

Yeah, but NFL is pretty well unwatchable no matter what. You need to replays to fill in the gaps when nothing is happening. Which is like 3/4th of the game.
