I think a $5 or $10 dollar cards only booster pack for each ship would go a long way towards helping the situation. I'd drop that for a new star viper pilot or make imperial slave 1 useful

Except there'd be an updated Y-Wing for you to fly! Perhaps with new exciting pilots, upgrade slots, and stuff. Maybe a bigger focus on bombs? Who knows!

Maybe they'd even include extra cards/cardboard so you could still use your old models.

But I can already get that through a hypothetical Aces pack (And halfway got one through the Most Wanted set). And I can continue using new upgrades for the ship that make it more viable, like TLT and Vectored Thrusters. If you instead set a hard date for when that ship becomes no longer legal to fly, if there isn't a replacement ship already in the pipeline then I'm effectively stuck in limbo. And since you've got 4-5 ships per wave (Not counting Aces packs and Huge Ships), a logjam would start building up pretty loving quick as old ships have to compete with new ships for spots in the release schedule. And what happens to ships that are a part of the now-nuked EU, like the E-Wing and the HWK? Do they just get retired altogether?

I certainly understand where you're coming from, but I just don't believe that it would be an adequate way to properly address the existing issues of balance that the game currently has. You'd just end up with a further divergence between tournament and casual play, and greater strain on the designers as they have to balance a far more cluttered release schedule.

Edit:

Do you have a TLT? BTL-A4? Bomb Loadout (and some bombs), Dutch and Targeting Astromech? If you answered no to all four, then you might as well leave it at home. Except the TLT is $20, BTL-A4 is $40, Bomb Loadout is in the same pack and also doesn't come with the bombs you probably want, and Targeting Astromech is another $15.

In the rotation model, unless the dial changes you're still going to have a ship you can use with your brand-new cardboard bases, except ideally you wouldn't be crippled if you don't have upgrades from X or Y other ship, many of which aren't even in your faction.

This I don't understand. There are a scant handful of ships in the game that can reach the top tables solely on the contents of their expansion, and a rotation model wouldn't change that. Even if they came out with an updated Y-Wing, for example, I'd still want to have Extra Munitions, Twin Laser Turret, and R3-A2 on hand.

Your objection is you can already take a Y-wing to a tournament.

My counter-argument is that it loving sucks without improvements from other ships, and that a rotational model would be able to fix the biggest issues at the same cost to the player without mandating Power Creep as a feature of the game.

I'll hear your stories when we come back, alright?
Rotation doesn't really make sense in a system where there's a hunk of painted plastic attached to the cards, and I don't want to buy literally the same hunk of painted plastic every two years so I can play with it at a tournament in your rotation model - if I can play it at all.

Saying I need to buy Most Wanted and the Rebel Transport to get the most out of a Y-Wing currently completely ignores that maybe, just maybe, people are buying those anyways for the merit of their contents by themselves, and boosts to existing ships are a bonus, rather than the new contents of those boxes (and their hunks of painted plastic) being an additional expense on my 15 dollar Y-Wing expansion. I'd rather spend $40 on a few new ships to get upgrades to existing ones, than pay 15 dollars for a ship I already have to be able to play it in a game!

And that ignores the issue of what do stores and distributors do with unsold stock of ships? The rotation cycle in the LCGs is probably too long, but in the same time that one set cycles out of say, Netrunner, your X-Wing proposal has two-thirds of SKUs being unsellable garbage!!

I will be sure to console my FLGS owner for the two Y-wings that he's had since he started carrying the game and have not sold will now not sell. What a tragedy.

I can genuinely say I would rather pay another $15 for a second ship (Seriously, unless the dial changes it comes with multiple cardboards already, you can run two) that works than $40-90 on a band-aid that comes with a 9 inch hunk of plastic I will never use to keep up with power creep.

I'm not sure why going to a rotation model would somehow prevent FFG from simply reintroducing all the problems with the current model only now every X years things start over from scratch like Groundhog Day minus the self-improvement.

A major problem with the current model is that a new ship must be competitive (or contain cards that make popular ships competitive) or it will not be used or bought. As such, power creep is not merely a side-effect it is the end-goal as long as FFG wants to make money.

Rotational models mean that the base power level of the game can reset every so often, so we don't end up with a continual gradual increase in ship power that renders obsolete everything from the early game without new cards deliberately designed to bring older or poorly performing ships up to par (packaged, of course, with expensive ship bundles).

Right but my point is that even if they swept the board clean there's no guarantee that Y-Wing 2.0 is going to be any more worth bringing competitively without later upgrades down the line coming in future-wave ships you also don't want.

But you're not getting rid of power creep! New ships and releases are still going to be more powerful and make better use of the mechanics than old ships, for the simple reason that the designers will continue to expand the space they're working in. And you would still need cards from other ships to make the best use of them, because that's how the game works

Furthermore, you keep mentioning dials, but if anything that's the number-one thing the designers would likely change about old ships! There's no way that the A-Wing and Interceptor wouldn't have had access to Talon Rolls or Sloops had they been in the game at the time, for example, and redesigned versions of those ships would almost certainly make those maneuvers available.

Is having to buy the Rebel Transport to get access to Wes or R3-A2 an ideal situation? Of course not. But neither is a rotation system, and I have serious doubts that it would do anything to functionally address the issues you have.

Well, I really like Tie Interceptors, for some reason, but needing to buy two star vipers, which I have no desire to play, and some Slave-1s, Scyks or U-wings, which, again, I have no desire to play, and I think maybe some other ships, just to be able to not give up the moment my opponent pulls out a ship with a turret, sucks.

Let alone the fact that there's no real point in bringing Fel/Carnor/Turr to a tournament anyway.

What if they did something else like Magic, and have different formats a TO could choose for tournaments? For example:

Limited - Wave 9 (previous wave) and Wave 10 (current wave) only.
Unlimited - Any ship and upgrade in the game.
Legacy - Waves 1-4 (including a couple Scum only Waves from the later Waves)

Regionals and such would be Limited only but other stuff stores run could be whatever, much like they are now with Hanger Bay.

It obviously doesn't translate 1:1 with Magic.

B-b-b-b-but the Reserve List!!

You could do 1-3 ships per wave that are just upgrades/alternatives to previous ships, as a way to keep old ships relevant in Unlimited and allow people to use old models in Limited. Or even just release upgrade packs for the old models so stores can keep the same old blisters. I honestly feel they're going to run out of ideas very soon for new ships, within a year or two even with Rebels and a new movie a year.

I would love card only expansions especially if they broadened the playing field by adding scenarios or co-op or made epic sensible. I'd be super happy with releases of old ships too as long as they bothered to update the models... Some of the Wave I stuff looks pretty poor in comparison now. Of course I'm the type who can answer 'yes' to any 'do you have' question so my priorities probably don't line up exactly with someone like Strobe.

It is still absolutely worth the points, it would just be amazingly broken if you could reuse it over and over again, especially on the new rebel ps9 tie fighter with captured tie. Even without it being reusable that is an amazing combo. If you're opponent doesn't have a ps9 (so basically any defender list) you are free to set up the first engagement where you can immediately ion them at will.
