Nobody really wins the war, the european theater just kinda destabilizes and all the big powerhouses of the last century are severely diminished. Well there is the question of war guilt and the treatment of occupied populations and the harsh peace imposed upon the Russians, among others, but I'll leave it at that. It's an interesting topic to discuss, and I believe that the end result ends up not being as much "everybody was bad" as alot of people think. And the first World War was vastly different in essentially every way from every preceding European conflict.

Everything about WW1 is a hyper complicated mess of political and social bullshit that is enough to have an entire topic on, like the entire collapse of the Tsars and every nation in europe all panicking to try and put down the communists (except the US who hilariously supported them thinking this was a good idea and was going to be french revolution 2.0 for them) despite still actually being at war, both allies and enemies joined together to try and help them collapse and penalise them to discourage other people to follow. On top of that I feel the harsh peace imposed on the Germans had pretty big consequences too. Turns out every time you financially and socially gently caress a nation up the arse you just get supervillains later.

Is it just going to be an island everyone on mainland france can see from shore and never bothered to check out? Is it going to be an american sailor? Why is it going to matter when the wars almost over ? Why this war and not the millions of european slap fests that happened for centuries before hand. Am I going insane?

Turns out every time you financially and socially gently caress a nation up the arse you just get supervillains later. Here's a secret: The harshness of the Versailles Treaty has been grossly overstated. The stab-in-the-back myth arguably was much more infuential in sowing the ground for nazism than any perceived harshness of the Versailles Treaty, the fact that insulted German nationalists most about the treaty wasn't its harshness but the perception that they had not in fact been militarily defeated but been betrayed by mutineers, republicans, socialists, Jews and war profiteers, therefore it was seen as unjust. In fact Germany prospered following WW1, fuelled by generous American loans and investments (which also angered German nationalists, like the Nazis). In fact a problem with the treaty was that following the war the British and the Americans were not sufficiently committed to upholding the terms laid down by the Treaty which in part was what led the French to occupy the Rhineland (in response to Germany hyperinflating its currency to pay reparations, which they could largely finance through American loans anyway). But, yeah, should we end it? If you want to discuss this there's always PMs.

I disagree that the reparations and humiliation of the treaty is that overstated. Everything about getting nazis and facism is a compounding thing imo where you have economic and social humiliation leading to requiring american investment leading to resentment and it all just kinda being individual logs thrown into the fire. France going full retard and taking pretty historic territory like that just provide a big excuse and banner waving opportunity to everything. Point is Europe goes from a inbred-hyper criss cross pattern of relationships, historical rivalries, partnerships, social tensions and economic shifts that is a super complex web all the way up to WW2 triggering off and in many ways resetting the board for who was important and who was friends with who. So you set something before that and its super interesting but its real tough say someone is a good guy or not. The Archaic posted:Look DC just needs a historic world war superhero-with-shield movie that doesn't directly copy Captain America ok? Just go with it. The Versailles Treaty isn't that relevant to the question of who was a bad guy or not during the war in the end. And Germany didn't require American loans, it got them and it kickstarted the German economy (and also made Germany very vulnerable when the Depression hit). Anyway, intriguing topic, not the proper thread for it (and very hard to stop discussing).

I don't give a poo poo about superhero movies but I never understood why every movie has to be an origin movie. You can have cop movies without showing 40 min of them deciding to become a cop and how their time at the academy went. No, you just start with movie with them already a detective and drop hints of their origin or time as a rookie, if relevant, with dialogue.
